OK. Explain WHY it makes no sense for citizenship to be granted based upon birth. You need to justify amending the constitution and all
Why not just start there? It's much more uniform...and fair Otherwise I could just pick the nation I want my child to be a citizen of by vacationing there when my wife is nine months pregnant
Explain the logic behind that solution. Unless one of them is here legally, both parents are equally guilty. Do you propose giving one of them a pass, and by doing so reward the act of illegal immigration and imply your support for all of it's negative impacts, for the sake of the baby?
I was born in America when my parents were legal residents. According to some of you I wouldn't be considered American, despite living here and paying taxes here my entire life. Seems to me this son of immigrants has a greater love for this country then you asshats. It's our fault why illegal immigration is such a fubar situation. We caused that either through in action or indifference and now that it's gotten so big that we can't ignore the fact we've been using slave labor some of you want to change the rules for everyone else. Well you can't hit the reset button on this one. If the sons of immigrants aren't American then none of us would be unless your all Cherokee or something. The only way I see this being resolved without changing the underlying principles of our great nation is giving citizenship to the kids born here of illegal immigrants and deporting them with their parents until they are of age. It's shameful some of you here are trying to wash your hands of this, no one cared fuck all about illegal immigrants until they started demanding rights. We're as much to blame for this situation as the illegals are.
It's funny the contortions some people leap through, finding the most outrageous ways to "fix" illegal immigration. National ID cards. Constant possession of proof of citizenship. Amendments to the constitution. The simplest solution, of course, is to actually enforce the laws already on the books, which are more than adequate but sadly ignored. That's what you folk ought to be pushing, instead of "bolder measures".
Ummmmmmm the mother, hopefully. Unless you intend to kidnap the kid and forbid the parents from taking it with them.
Because waves of illegals will still come pouring into the US because we haven't done anything to fix the underlying problem - fixing the migration laws and fixing the work laws. Both need to be done, and the border enforced, for sure. I personally think we should also punish the asshats that broke the law in the first place - which includes the immigrants and the businesses.
Hey, you don't have to tell me. The Muad Dib Plan for Immigration Reform involves fences, machine guns, land mines, and the occasional random artillery barrage. It is the stuff of legends on wrodforge. At least, just enforcing the current laws would be better than what we're doing.
I'm still not seeing what's so unworkable about securing every inch of the southern border. Accepting that the economy can adapt to the loss of illegal labor, the remaining objections can be boiled down to "it's expensive" and "it's not nice." To the expense complaint, I ask "How badly do we want it?" For all the crap that amounts to "it's not nice," all I've got is . That it might make life harder for illegals and the country of Mexico is completely, 100% fucking irrelevant.
I'd suggest giving the kid citizenship upon turning eighteen, at which point the parents can't get jack shit in the way of income for the child. I honestly can't advocate any sort of "take the baby away from it's parent by choice" actions, no matter what the circumstances. As Herbologist said, changing citizenship out of knee jerking will cause a boatload of other problems and, in turn, create even more illegal aliens. I wouldn't want Americans to pay for the exploitation of a loophole, but neither would I want to deny someone of their citizenship based on their parent's poor decision making.
I disagree. Giving the kid anything is still rewarding the crime and reason for more illegals to jump over to give birth here. Minors go with their parents/guardians. If they want to live here they can come back when they are an adult and get in legally.
Ok, so that individual stays illegal forever then? Ok fair enough. What if they have a child with another person who isn't a citizen?
Or until they migrate legally. Hmmm you make a good point. What happens when you have third, fourth or fifth generation illegals? I suppose a new category of immigration could be created. Let's say that native born children of illegal immigrants get a "Non-Citizen Native" status (actual legal term may vary), which means that if the child manages to live his entire life in the US until he reaches 18, it would require just a simple administrative procedure to get legal residency at that point. As a legal resident, he would still have the same opportunity to apply for citizenship as anyone else with that status. But... if the child leaves the country with his parents before he turns 18 (ie illegal parents are discovered and deported), he loses his "Non-Citizen Native" status and has to go through the same hoops as everyone else to legally migrate.
