Did any of you guys ever really know Hitler?

I mean, sure he commited a wee bit of genocide, but he was a great guy once you got to know him. He was a great bridge partner, and you really should have seen his version of the banana sketch!!!

What a naive and ill-informed comment Will Smith made.

Looks like the man needs more than a little additional education...he's basically an intelligent man, but he should have taken MIT up on the scholarship they offered him 20 years ago, rather than going for the immediate money. If he had, his knowledge base would be a lot broader and he wouldn't have made foolish public statements like that.

Most people in show business spend their lives perfecting their craft and living in a narrow, artificial world--that's why so few of them successfully make the transition into public life outside of show business.

Read what the man actually said and think about it before you condemn him for it.

I have to agree with Paladin on this... What he said I'msure is true, but if I were in the public eye like Will is, I'd stay as far away from pontificating on the motivations of Hitler as I could... I'm sure that he's kicking himself in the ass right now... not because he said or did anything wrong, but he's aware of how the media can sensationalize a comment to make it seem as if it were more than it was just so that they can sell a story....

I wonder what the context of it was? How did this even come up in a conversation?

It usually comes up in "Nature of Evil" conversations.

Hitler is frequently cited as an example of Unknowing Evil, that is, most believe he genuinely thought he was doing good, as opposed to making the intentional choice to do evil.

What if it was a broad knowledge base that let him make a "foolish" statement not understood by those of lesser intellect?

I fail to see the problem here. All he basically said was that Hitler "believed" he was doing good things, which by the way is totally true. Most psychologists who've studied him totally agree with that. But that's far from an endorsement. It's more a step in understanding Hitler, a man most people (never even alive in the WWII epoch) are so filled with rage over, they don't care one way or the other.

I cannot believe the number of people that are defending Will Smith on this. The only reason is because he is black. I remember how marge Scott said about the same thing and they raised hell at here and more or less kicked her out of baseball.

I can't believe how many people can't understand what Will Smith actually said was, "Even though Hitler was twisted and evil, Hitler didn't think of himself as such, and really no evil person thinks of himself as evil."

So, you've gotta be one of the following:

    a. Too stupid to realize he's not defending Hitler.
    b. Too drunk to realize he's not defending Hitler.
    c. That special balance of drunk and stupid that lets you type incredibly stupid shit without falling out of your chair.

    I'm going with 'c', personally.

I vote for "Will Smith is just another half-educated celebrity who just HAD to grace us with a sample of his vast knowledge of geopolitical history."

    Shut up and sing already.

Meh. He's entitled to his opinion...if it's just answering a question in an interview then I got no beef with it, why shouldn't he?

It the blooming idiots in the media who portray the vies of a celebrity as more important or relevant than that of anyone else that need to be horsewhipped.

I don't care, for instance, if Alec Baldwin hates bush....bulldog doesn't think uch of him either. both are entitled to their views. the ones that get me are the ones who think being famous makes your views more important. That applies to the stuffed shirt crusaders like Baldwin who are enamored with themselves, and the media who reinforce that hubris.

But I don't see any of that in this situation. Smith was asked a question and he answered it. I, for one, am not going to insist he refrain from commenting on anything in life but his next movie.
