Mod abuse at TBBS? Say it ain't so!

Cary L. Brown gives Dennis Bailey a totally called-for dressing down here.

Resulting in an UNcalled-for flame warning from Ptrope a few posts later, with only a mild wrist-slap at dennis for causing it.

Cary emailed me the next day that he'd been banned from the board for it.

I definitely didn't see why there were two levels of discipline there. Then again, I didn't really see what Cary had done that was so bad.

They made Ptrope a mod? That piece of shit? Jayzus.

I wish I could say I was shocked by any of this.

The mods abuse their power and let their friends get away with murder at Trekbbs.

I haven't been this surprised since Lance Bass came out.

That post pretty much sums up the bias.

No doubt Dennis is a condescending, arrogant prick most of the time, but saying something is logically absurd (especially when it really is) cannot be construed as an insult. However, Cary's response clearly was an insult directed at a specific poster, which I understand is against the rules.

I don't think he should have been banned for it though, unless he had acquired the requisite number of warnings.

I'd never seen a Cary warning before. Could be though, I suppose - I post here more than here now.

That said, Dennis is clearly a troll that is allowed to get by because of something I didn't know - he had something to do with a crap episode of TNZ.

What was his role though?

He wrote the episode "Tin Man" and IIRC at least contributed to a couple others.

Meet him in real life, he's an interesting fellow.

I don't think I'd care to meet him irl. He's expressed his disdain of me - I think he would purposefully be unpleasant.

Tin Man was gheyer than Tex singing a capella at the Blue Oyster.

Not to mention it was what... 20 years ago? Has he even done anything since then, Star Trek or otherwise?

So who gives a damn? Wasn't like he was ever even on screen as a crewman or something.

They changed the ban structure a while ago, around the same time they loosened the rules in TNZ.

The warning log doesn't go back far enough for me to verify it, but I recall seeing Cary in there more than a few times in the last year.


Besides, it's Trek Art. I can understand flaming someone in TNZ, or even Misc, but if you can't keep your cool discussing while discussing your drawings of the Enterprise and whatnot, you probably deserve a banning.

Here's another example of a troll. Now, I don't mind the troll itself. I mean, I post in the redroom here just fine without complaining to anyone. What bugs me is that if I respond in kind, I get a warning... yet others are free to do what they want to me in misc or any other forum on that board.

I'm not going to waste time with the thread, but Dennis is the reason I wound up over here. I got a 5 day ban from Borgminister in TNZ for calling him a troll(!) The irony is, within a month T'Bonz "permabanned" him for being a troll. Of course because he is Dennis Bailey he was let back in after a month or two.

I always liked him/her (was never 100 percent on the gender) and their posts back when ENT had a bunch of traffic.

'Course, it wasn't especially hard to come across as a reasonable poster three years ago, either.

Did you use the "notify mod" button?

I liked Ptrope as well. And when push comes to shove, he'd probably do a decent job moderating the art section. I'd have to see the context on this thing to come to a conclusion. And for that to happen, I'd have to care.

Looking at that post, I'm not seeing the mod abuse. Ptrobe also called out DB/Starship Polaris for having a history of being a twat --because let's be honest, if you build up a rep of being a twat, people will eventually have a hard time taking you seriously when you do turn off the twat behavior-- but honestly, I wish TBBS had MORE mods who were willing to say what I'm sure plenty of others were thinking on that poster.

Like I said, Ptrobe from what I knew of him is a pretty decent guy. I won't say he's not capable of mod abuse (after my experiences here in '06, I don't think anyone's above it), but I did find it a bit hard to believe.

Yes, Dennis was too harsh there, but it wasn't flaming. Cary crossed the line. Ptrope called both of them out for it, and he's not the type to let an outright flame go past him (not that there ever are many in that forum).

Let's clarify here: Are you banned if you use it, or are you banned if you abuse it again?

Because we know you and Kirk have abused it in the past.

If I felt that TPTB on any board were "bigoted" against me, I would leave. Life's too short. I agree that there are times when one has to take a stand, but martyring oneself over an Internet BBS to me makes no sense.

Cary is a big baby. As for Dennis - he didn't say anything that wasn't true and none of it was directed to the individual. Fair call, IMO.

Speaking of trolls. I'm astonished the blatantly obvious troll InstantKarma hasn't been given his departure papers.

I just looked at the Misc thread again (I was going to notify it myself), and he got a friendly for it.

Seems reasonable. I've never seem him troll you before, and the thread was pretty much dead anyways.
