Tonight is my engagement party and I've just realised I am going to have to give a speech. Now, I have been putting lots of thought into my wedding speech next year, but the one thing I haven't given any thought to is tonight's speech. Now, any ideas for what sort of one liners really goes down a storm?
Nom that's a stag night. An engagement party is when you have the first "official" meeting of the two families.
Ah, okay well I'm unfamiliar with that occasion. My folks met my wife's folks at our wedding. That said, I suspect the goal is to introduce the families to each other and get things started off on the right foot. And I'd imagine everyone involved wants it to go well. An easy audience. So all you have to do is make a brief comment or two about the two families uniting, specifically how you both appreciate the acceptance given from the others family. Throw in a joke if you want but it isn't necessary. Get up, say some slop, sit down. Nothing to worry about. More importantly, congratulations!
Well, this is probably waaay too late, but I find that most engagement or wedding speeches suck arse. The favourite speeches that I do remember have always been extremely brief (i.e., less than a minute), emotional and witty.
Well, I think that just mentioning that you sent out a last minute plea to your socially retarded Internet friends ought to be good for a laugh. Just go with that.
I know less than half of you as well as I should like and like less than half of you as well as you deserve... Hope you didn't use that one....
"When I first met Sally, I was so taken that I immediately had to excuse myself to go rub one out in the loo."
Glad to hear it was all good... things to avoid mentioning for your wedding speech: 1. Prostitutes 2. Internet acronyms (with the possible exception of WTFOMGBBQ) 3. Bowel movements 4. Any American Pie movie My work here is done.
I've been married for two years and I have yet to witness the unholy consequences of her family interacting with mine.
I have been with DH for almost 4 years now and my inlaws have yet to meet my side of the family. And its going to stay that way. (just edited to say that am thrilled that it went well for you sending good vibes for the wedding plans....and the wedding day!)
