The ONLY other example I can think of is Daryl's. I'm not sure how nationwide a chain it was, but the one my family used to go to was honestly open with a 2-3 hour wait for a table one day, completely boarded up the next.
Didn't like Popeye's go away for a while, but someone bought out the name or some such? I remember reading about that. Anyway, I can get beans and rice again, so I'm cool with it.
This will end worse than my Tamar thread. Run now, while you still have the chance, and before Mewa starts in about unlimited free Coke refills... (Anyway, we know that in the future, all restaurants will be Taco Bell...)
I went there once. I quickly surmised the food was of "pet and day laborer" quality and promptly left. They soon closed, and the abandoned (some say haunted) building watches over a busy intersection nearby.
In any case, all chain restaurants suck: it's a scientific fact. The beauty of any restaurant is in the creativity of the cooking staff, and chain restaurants adhere strictly to a set regimen of frozen foods and consider salt and pepper proper seasoning. Some are better than others. Places like Applebee's, Chili's, and Red Robin need to be returned to Hell.
That's damn scary. All he ghosts of all the food that went there to die...still roaming the stalls.... *shudder* I won't sleep well tonight...
I remember something similar happening with Clothestime's six years ago. Used to be my favorite place to shop, but apparently by the time they declared bankruptcy, they hadn't enough money to pay their employees for their last week of work (which is why the news of the chain's closure made the local news). It sucks for the people who work there.
I shit you not, they have a Red Lobster in Waikiki. One of my greatest pleasures in life was, when my "foodie" friends from Minneapolis came out to visit, I offered to take them there. I think that night we went to either La Mariana Sailing Club or some North Shore shrimp truck.
1) 'Fresh' seafood has usually only been frozen one time less than say Red Lobster Seafood. Think about it. Fish hauled up. Thrown in icechest. Gets to marina. Hauled out and thrown on dock. Filleted. Thrown into ice chest. Here it either goes to local seafood joint (frozen 2 times) or back into a freezer to be shipped (frozen 3 times). This from someone who has worked the 'fresh seafood' restaurants and my cousin the docks. Truth of the mater is these days little of the seafood you get today even on the coast is local. Most comes from Vietnam, Ecuador, Peru, or Chile. Shit's simply cheaper. 2) I can't remember the last time I had my parents order for me. I must have been very young. Although I do remember the time I was at NOLAs (very nice place) and ordered a Filet and then asked for A1. Ended up having the chef come out and explain to me exactly where he bought my steak, how he was going to cook it, and thus why I did not need any steak sauce. Must have been 10 or so. Learned my lesson. Never eaten steak sauce with a steak worth the name since. 3) On the point of ordering, nothing wrong with asking for help. Sometimes I really don't know what to order. It's not that won't know exactly what everything is (most of the time), just that I'm not really sure what I want. In those situations I go to the experts. "What do you order when you come in on an offday for the 1/2 priced meal?" I was a server for 4 years. I ate every damn thing in all my restaurants at least once. I also knew what all the regulars loved. Someone asks me what to order I'm going to give them an honest opinion if only b/c I know that someone who liked their meal is more likely to tip me better than someone who didn't. I've yet to have a fellow server lead me wrong when I ask for advice. Did the same thing today. Walked into a wine shop, told the merchant what labels my wife () liked and asked what I should. I'm a redneck not a sommelier how the fuck should I know?!? Why should I buy a shitty wine when I can have an expert recommend one? Worked out perfectly. He got a couple good sales and I got... well... nevermind. 4) Chains have their place. Sometimes you just want a quick beer and bite to eat. No gourmet spread required. Ain't shit wrong with that.
