Robotech's comment in the other thread got me thinking about old games, and then I remembered a problem I had: So a couple months ago teh Baba gave me some links to an old game I wanted to play 'Lords of the Realm II' It and the addon (which I've never played) are both abandoned ware. I can get the game to install and can ever play it, but can't get the sound to work. My options are something like "Sound Blaster, Sound Blaster Pro, Tandy something or other, a couple others and Internal Speaker." None of which work. How do I get around this?
Man, I've done it, but it was a pain IIRC. I think you might have to, depending on the game, muck about with things like the IRQ settings - I've made it work on windows XP with soundblaster pro for a few older games. Good luck, its been awhile but I know it can be done.
The DOSBox emulator should include support for old sound card options. It's a little intimidating if you haven't used DOS commands in a while but its well worth downloading if you have a ton of abandonware you're itchin' to play. you might even be able to find support for this game on one of the DOSBox forums.
Si, DOSBox. Or, and this is more extreme, you could dual-boot with Windows 95/98/DOS as your secondary?
Many old games need to run off FAT32 or in win9x compatability mode. Ive got a few oldies to work by putting them on my 'oldgames' FAT32 partition
DOSBox basically emulates an older computer inside of your own, and converts any call out to the hardware to be handled by, y'know, not hardware that's a decade and a half old. Works great. Kind of a pain to set up, at least last I tried it, but I've been enjoying Commander Keen with absolutely no problems.
Right click on kotor.exe and try clicking 'run in compatability mode for', and then try XP. If that doesn't work try 98/ME insted. KOTOR is one of the things I havnt got around to installing yet on vista
