Apparently, they've been fighting very publicly. Something about Takei not inviting Shat to his wedding.
What's the deal with Shatner period? He's hated by most whom work with him and he throws a complete fit when he doesn't get his way.
So The Shat acts like any other Hollywood primadonna. So what? So Shat tried to get more lines and more time on camera than anyone else on Star Trek. There isn't an actor in Hollywood that doesn't try to do the exact same thing. Takai just forgot that his whole job on that show was to hit buttons, say "Klingons on the starboard bow" and have slant eyes and that was it. He should be greatful he got any more lines or even any parts of episodes featuring him.
I remember reading way back around the time of Trek II/III that Takei was upset at Shatner because Shatner kicked up a huge fuss because the original scripts had Sulu getting command of the Excelsior. And Shat wanted to be THE capitan. But almost all the cast of TOS had issues with Shatner.
Remember the episode where the transporter made a good and an evil Kirk? And Sulu was stuck on a freezing planet with his poodle? And he made all the men huddle with him for warmth? Good times.
He was never whining. He pushed to get a series and it didn't happen. Not even in the same ballpark as some of these gems: -Magazine comes to shoot Nimoy while he applies his Spock Ears. Shatner throws a hissy fit and yells, "FROM NOW ON MY MAKEUP WILL BE APPLIED IN MY ROOM!" He didn't get along with Nimoy until the movies. -Shatner only got along with co-stars that he could sleep with. If they were male and good looking, he hated them eg: Ricardo Montalbon. I will give him the benefit of the doubt in that he seems to get along better with his co-starts nowadays, but back in the 60s he was a grade A prima dona. -Shatner had entire scripts re-written that would reduce the screen time of the other cast members. And no not EVERYONE does this. I don't remember hearing about Clint Eastwood doing this on Rawhide,or Michael Landon doing this on Bonanza or Little House on the Prairie.I certainly never heard of Mathew Perry or any of the other Friends actors doing this to each other. So please spare me the "Everyone does this" crap. -When TNG came out and became a success, Shatner made many disparaging remarks about it. He did the same this year when he found out he wasn't going to be in the next Star Trek movie.
One might remember back then there weren't ensemble shows as there is now. Back then the show was Star Trek starring William Shatner. Clint Eastwood was not considered the star of Rawhide (no matter what the young females watching the show thought). Eric Fleming was the star. Ditto Michael Landon on Bonanza. He was the star on Little House on the Prairie - and he got more air time than a lot of the other folks. The fact that he wrote some that gave other actors more air time did not change that he was the star (and top dog all the way around) So while Shatner was a prima dona, he was no different than many other stars of the day. That Takei and others wanted to get more air time and got less is mostly due to the fact that at the time they were co stars not stars. And garamet - isn't it true that that classification did mean something back then about air time etc?
In a 2nd hand account defense of Shatner, my current theater professor worked with him and commented how against type he was. He was gracious to everyone on the set, including the crew. However, this was much more recent that some of the infamous stuff he did during TOS.
