I thought the INS had this problem under control. Apparently I was wrong link: http://www.wsmv.com/news/18041711/detail.html#-
I totally agree. I don't mean to sound callous and I know you don't either. If these people would stop jumping the border and coming here illegally, they wouldn't wind up in these situations.
How are they slaves exactly? Did someone go to their countries and abduct them and bring them to the USA and keep them chained up?
True for some. Others, especially the young kids are forced to come here by the smugglers and are sold for sex slavery. That is not their fault.
Every time they write "sex-slave advocate" in that article it seems like those people are for sexual slavery...
Exactly! I've read other stories about international thugs, that were targeting women ranging anywhere from eastern europe, to both the Middle East and Asian Pacific Islands!
I don't know if I agree with that so much as 'I'd rather go back than be forced into sexual slavery'.
I think the "Slave" part of "Sex Slave" could indicate that they are being forced into the country...
I could have misread the article, but, I got the impression that the women didn't want to say anything because they feared being deported.
I'm not sure if the police/reporter/whoever got the wrong idea somewhere or the women are truly that ... desparate to stay. It just sounds to me like there's more going on than what is in the article.
Unless they were already sex slaves in their own countries, and they were smuggled here where they could make their owners more money. Moving the girls around makes it less likely they'll find someone to help them get out. Don't worry, there's plenty more where that came from.
Most of these women only know what they are told, and the people over them tell them over and over that if they are caught they'll be deported or worse. Fear and misinformation is what keep these girls in slavery, well that and brutality.
Indeed. Probably they don't want to be deported to be taken by the same criminal gang that smuggle them in the first place. The second aspect is that after being raped frequently (like 30 to 60 times a day), they might not have a lot of self-esteem left and going back to their country and to face their poor family, their neighbour, etc.. might not be very appealing.
Or that many of them face worse back in their home countries. Even many of those who would be safer back home have probably been told terrible stories of punishment they will face if immigration officials catch them.
These criminals should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and then deported. And they should throw the book at sex trafficers too.
It's why feminism is still relevant . . . no, not your straw-man man-hating kind of feminist, but the kind that says that women are people, are due all the freedoms men have, and must be responsible for their own happiness and well-being. Maybe what's making so many third-world girls and women such easy victims of sex trafficking is that their cultures treat them like helpless children forever dependent on men.
So you're saying punish the victims because they aren't legal citizens.... oh and "while your at it" be sure to punish the abusers, but let them off easy because they're US citizens which somehow makes their crime against another human being better than being an illegal forced here against their will? That's asinine.
