At Least 36 Hurt In Brooklyn School Grate Collapse Girls, Ages 10 To 12, Injured Outside Yeshiva Shaarei Torah Elementary School During Picture Day John Slattery BROOKLYN (CBS) ― FDNY officials said at least three dozen students were being treated after a grate collapsed at a school in Brooklyn. Thirty-six students at the Yeshiva Shaarei Torah Elementary School, all girls aged 10 to 14, were standing on the grate to take a class photo. They fell 12 feet to the ground. Fire officials say all but 5 of the students were brought to area hospitals Friday morning. One girl suffered serious bone fractures, fire officials said. The other injuries were said to be minor. Fire officials said a number of other students were being treated on the scene. The girls were lined up for an end-of-the-year photo in front of the building and were standing on a sidewalk window well grate when it gave way. Emergency crews went through basement windows to reach the injured students, who fell among metal pipes, the FDNY said. A temporary fence was set up around the area until the grate could be repaired. The Buildings Department said the bolts attached to the grate were worn, causing the accident, and said crews were investigating. The school was issued a violation for failing to maintain the structure and may be fined, but it wasn't immediately clear how much. School officials declined to comment. The school, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish school with about 260 students in grades one through eighth, is in the Prospect Park South area. http://wcbstv.com/local/brooklyn.collapse.school.2.1016781.html ************************** Sorry, but I have no sympathy for this situation. What in the world would make you think that all those kids could stand on that grating. Dumb move. Very dumb. And I bet some sue the school. That sure would suck. The grate, even at its strongest and new would not have been designed to hold up 36 kids. It was never made for that purpose.
Yeah. It's a damn shame they all lived, Mewa. Some fatalities would have taught 'em a lesson or two for sure! Goddamn little brats bein' all disrespectful towards metal grates....
Well I;m sure some adults were there. But yeah, I think somebody should have said.."Hey, you think this thing is strong enough for us to all stand on?" And what was wrong with the front steps of the school? Just plain stupid in my opinion. I've seen those grates all my life in NYC around building. You don't fucking stand on them. That's why they are close to the building. Its not part of the walking path. You have the sidewalk and then you have those grates. You gotta be stupid to say to yourself...."Hey, lets all 36 of us stand on this grate over a 12 foot drop."
Is it worth pointing out that these girls were being ordered to stand on the grate by ostensibly responsible adults? And that, as female members of a fundamentalist religion, they have been conditioned from birth never to question authority?
Those adults are also to blame. But Garamet, you know the deal. You know exactly what that grate deal is and that you don't do stuff like that on those grates.
You do if you're a girl raised in a fundamentalist religion. Remember how the nuns used to terrorize you in school? Multiply that by a factor of 10.
Yah, okay. But I'm picturing what would happen to little Rakele if she raised her hand and said "B-but, teacher, this doesn't look safe!" The call to her parents after the teacher yanks her out of the crowd and sends her to the principal's office in disgrace is only the beginning of her worries...
I say that you are making an enormous assumption. However, I understand why kids might not have found anything wrong with the situation. After all, we don't prevent kids from smoking, drinking, driving, voting, and buying lottery tickets "just because".
Let's say I know a little about religious schools. Are adults ordering kids to do these things? Apples/oranges.
THIS one? If not, then you are making an assumption. Why are you arguing against my point when my point reinforces your point?
More on the news. Everybody is passing the buck on this. School officials are saying the bolts were worn on the grate. So I guess if they get sued they will then blame the contractor that installed the grates. But they were not designed for 40 kids to stand on. The parents are also questioning why that spot was chosen for the picture. The teacher or teachers that were on the scene for the photo shoot are to blame. And I think the kids should have questioned the decision to stand on the grate. But Garamet has a strong point. I also went to private school. You do what you are told. These are not your bad ass public school kids. They actually do what they are told.
Now to make light of the situation, but I can just imagine a bunch of Jewish kids complaining: "Oy vey, my hip!" "Your hip? My leg!" "Your leg? You should see my arm!"
I dunno. Those grates are there for walking on. It would never occur to me that one would collapse. I can't say that anyone should have thought it would happen. I don't think it would occur to anyone who's been walking on them all their lives. It's popular to look for someone to blame. but sometimes that's just plain pointless, if not counterproductive. Don't look to place blame, rather direct energy into fixing the problem instead. In this case, the fix is easy: public awareness has now been alerted to NOT put a lot of weight on those grates, so it shouldn't happen again. Meanwhile, grates can be replaced gradually with newer ones. I learn from the example of two different bosses I've had. One was an asshole whose first reaction to a problem was a bellowed "Okay, whose fault is it?" the other is my current boss whose response to any problem is a quiet "Well, it's done, now how can we fix it?" The first led to more bad feelings, poor morale, and not getting the problem solved. The latter leads to, simply, problems getting solved.
A very little it seems. Judging from your comments in this post, you know exactly jackshit. However, that has never stopped you from spouting off in the past, in fact this applies to just about every post of yours that I've ever read. Continue on, ignorance is bliss, or so it seems to be for you.
