I mean it's a chance to see the show in a new way. If it sucks, well it's not like they round up all the copies of the original and burn them. It's pretty obvious the rest of the internet doesn't feel that way by the collective seizures everyone has when a remake is announced...WF is no exception.
No, but sometimes it corrupts the nice memories of the original, or pisses me off by making fun of something that I loved.
I don't have a problem with remakes per se, just the fact that most of them seem to be utter shit. The companies making them know that the faithful will watch them/buy them, whatever, so it seems like they put a lot less effort in to them.
I may enjoy the occasional remake (Addams Family), but I detest the parodies (Starsky & Hutch, Wild Wild West...)
When done correctly - that is as an homage to the original as well as to perhaps update it - then I see nothing wrong with it. When done to "correct the problems" that someone saw in the original (and most others didn't see any problems) then no. My biggest concern is that today it seems as if the corporate idea is to remake the old because they don't have an original idea. There are ways to take an old idea and give it a new twist. House, for example, is a tried and true medical show, but the twist is the doctor has his own problems. Monk is a detective show, but the detective has a flaw that sometimes makes it nearly impossible to do his job. But it seems that Hollywood isn't wanting to work extra hard to get our attention, so they find an old show that had a following, dust it off and "remake" it for today's masses. And then wonder why the folks go back to watching the Lucy reruns on the cable.
I can just imagine the story conference when the writers were developing Monk. Writer 1: So, let's make him eccentric like, yanno, who was that guy with the raincoat? Writer 2: Columbo. Writer 1: Yeah, Columbo. Guy was a real slob. Writer 3: It's been done. Writer 1: Yeah, damn... Writer 2: But what if he's like the total opposite? Columbo was a slob, right? What if we make this guy a total neat freak? Writer 3: Yeah, my sister-in-law's like that. Always straightening pictures, moving things around... Writer 1: Yeah, there's like a syndrome for that; my therapist was telling me. Writer 3: OCD. Obsessive something-or-other. Writer 2: Compliant, com - something? Writer 1: Compulsive. Yeah, a detective with OCD. Dusts the crime scene before the lab gets there... Writer 3: I like it! Writer 2: I love it! [High-fives all around] All Three: Lunchtime! Oh, and remakes? Mixed feelings. BSG was excellent. King Kong v.3 was only vaguely related to either v.1 or v.2. Someone will eventually do yet another version of Body Snatchers. Anything else, not so sure...
Garamet ever read any of the Fors whatever ww2 proffesor Wing Commander books. One of the few licensed books from computer game series that are decent.Folks who love naval and airforce lore will love the detail in the books.
They fall on their asses more often than not. Even BSG and the latest ST movie, both of which I judge as successful overall, fell victim to hype overwhelming substance. Usually a remake just ends up insulting the original while introducing a whole new set of cringe-worthy flaws in the process. You can usually tell the difference between "You know, that gives me an idea..." and "I bet I could do that better."
Anyone can remake classic, favorite shows. Let's do something challenging.....the worst shows ever! COP ROCK alone would be well worth the effort IMO. http://sfl.southflorida.com/pages/photo_gallery_landing/?galleryID=1243#26348
Hmm. What model car would she be? Should they stick with the 1928 Porter, or update it to, say, a 1974 Pacer?
