You didn't bother to read the OP did you?

Under the Thune-Vitter amendment, an individual who has met the requirements for a carry permit, or who is otherwise allowed by his home state's state law to carry a firearm, would be authorized to carry a firearm for protection in any other state that issues such permits, subject to the laws of the state in which the firearm is carried.

Me neither. Which makes my point of that being a stupid question.

Wow. CBS news is... I can't believe an American news agency does such a piss poor job reporting. This is commentary, not reporting.

I'm the last person you'll see defending CBS news, but please point out the "commentary" to me.

The use of the word "note" is damning.

When are we going to get to start carrying guns at schools?

Well, he's not wrong -- "note" is a word print editors usually tell reporters not to use except in the most innocuous of circumstances, because it carries the implication that the speaker is right.

However, many writers are not all that good at thinking about nuance, and just use "noted" as a synonym for "said" when they feel like having a little variety.

I've seen a lot of reporters who were conservative in their personal beliefs write things that came out sounding liberal, and reporters who were liberal in their personal beliefs write things that came out sounding liberal, simply because of poor writing or reporting skills.

So I think Apostle's at least part right -- it is editorializing, although I think it's just as likely to be the result of incompetence it is to result from any actual intent.

    Well there's the problem, then.

    It's from a teevee network. ;)

Your suggestion of Hanlon's razor, though, is probably much more correct than any blatant editorializing. Trust me, I've seen stories that were blatantly editorializing and this one isn't.

To me, the word "note" implies that there is some great Canon of Imperical Facts and Truths that what was "noted" came from. That they used it is the same as if they bolded what the anti-gunners said, underlined it, and drew an arrow to the left saying "We agree with the facts!!"

Yeah, but your entire worldview is through the sights of a gun.

When you grow up, you'll realize there's more to life than your firearms.

    Sure it did.

You see the story that way because your entire world seems to revolve around guns. apostle is to guns as Mewa is to black. Here, at least, they apparently define you and your worldview.

I (and tafkats, for that matter) see it as more likely being the misuse of a word than some nefarious "librul plot!" At least in this instance.

You are familar with Hanlon's razor, right?

And even assuming it was some sort of anti-gun, librul hit piece (which it clearly is not), there's one word that's questionable. One word out of a 1:30 or so story.

Considering the politics of most network news people, that's pretty balanced.

Your own worldview is coming into play. Who said anything about a plot? I didn't. I don't think there is any plot here - I just see a reporter writing an article that doesn't like guns. I see a lot of bias in the media on a lot of subjects. I just happen to enjoy shooting.

Tell you what - what would you like me to post about? :drunkfriends:

Of course it is. In this case, though, mine carries more weight than yours because I can see both sides of the issue. Plus, I've been in the business since shortly after you got off your mama's tit and, in this case at least, I'm just not seeing any real bias. Lazy writing, most likely, but both sides of the issue (pro- and anti-gun) were represented in the story.

No one, specifically. But that's the conventional wisdom (not entirely misplaced, I might add) about the national media's "librul agenda!" when it comes to guns.

I won't even disagree that, in the big picture, that's not an inaccurate view. I just see this particular piece as being pretty evenly balanced.

    Sure you don't.

That may be so, but it's not clear from this one story. Again, you're hanging your whole arguement on one word.

So do I, on both counts. I've been shooting a lot longer than you have and I probably own more guns that you do. Believe me, I'm very tuned in to media bias when it comes to guns. Probable even moreso.

    I don't care.

CBS radio just now called the Senate vote a "rare defeat for gun rights advocates". Rare? Or not?

I am thrilled not because the bill lost, of course, but because we could have a liberal (in the true sense of the word) federal CCW bill not just get proposed, but come within 2 votes of passing the U.S. Senate.

If we keep pressing, it's only a matter of time before the 2nd is restored.

Wait, no, now it's a "rare victory for gun-control advocates". CBS is such a master of rhetoric.

And Barbara Boxer is "appalled" at the legislation, seeing as how it supposedly stomps all over states' rights.

We would probably have to stab ourselves to wake up, instead of shooting our kneecaps off.

I suppose that the fact that serious crime is 'plunging' could have nothing to do with the fact that Americans have been out arming themselves like crazy ever since last November, eh? :chris:

It definately has nothing to do with the fact that 40 states now have carry permits vs.... less than 10 30 years ago.
