Saw this one night before last. It's a low budget, Blair Witch-like suspense film. The plot: Micah and Katie are a twentysomething couple sharing a house in which strange noises are heard and odd things happen (doors slam, keys are dropped on the floor, etc.). Micah obtains a video camera in order to film the couple and their room while they sleep, hoping to capture something sensational on tape. Katie, having had this experience as a little girl, is scared and asks a psychic to visit them. The psychic suspects they are being haunted by a demon (as opposed to a human spirit, or ghost) and that the demon wants Katie. The psychic warns them: do not, under any circumstances, try to communicate with the demon in this house; doing so will only draw the demon further into this reality. Micah, of course, disregards this warning and begins talking to the demon, challenging it, insulting it, even offering up a Ouija board to it. He really shouldn't have done that... This is not a movie that scares you by showing you something scary. It scares you by showing odd things and by NOT showing you other things. And it's pretty effective; everytime something happens and the couple goes through the house with the video camera, you're dreading what's around each corner. Like The Blair Witch Project, this one doesn't have a happy ending; but you'll know for certain what happened when it does end... Suspenseful and scary, though not quite as potent as Blair Witch when it was new, Paranormal Activity nonetheless delivers a spooky experience. 7/10.
