How did they shoot so many? When shootings like Virgina Tech happen, the first knee jerk reaction is that this wouldn't happen if people were allowed to carry, and yet on an Army base they can get away with a pretty mass shooting. Is no one armed on the base?

You are right (pretty much). People are NOT armed on a military base.
Only police are armed. Until you get to an actual shooting range, you will never have a round in a weapon.

Some folks might have a weapon in their vehicle, but only if they are on their way to hunting, or target shooting.

That's why pulling an armed robbery on a military post is a cakewalk.
People have a false sense of security, and their guard is down.
Couple that with the fact that NOBODY is carrying, and you have a low-risk robbery if you are so inclined.

1. on leave
2. TDY
3. special training/classes across post
4. deployed to Iraq

Fox has interviewed a Colonel that worked with him and a family member.

According to the family member, he's a life long Muslim. According to the Colonel, he hadn't been to Iraq but was extremely outspoken about Iraq and Afghanistan. He had also been under investigation. He was doing everything he could to keep from getting deployed.
