The world sees that now we are a kindler, gentler, more inclusive, tolerant, diverse, etc. etc. nation! It should be obvious to everyone! I'm just surprised that every former enemy hasn't beaten their swords into plowshares yet!
Further proof we have a one party system. A "major disappointment for Democrats" or "a political victory for Republicans" Who cares? The issue here is privacy. The donkey and elephant show is but a tired distraction. And the Patriot Act rolls on.
The one and only reason the appearance of a two-party system is maintained is to divide the chore of placating the masses so they can go on unimpeded as they do exactly what they want.
What's the problem? I thought everyone here loved the patriot act. Remember, all through the Bush debacle, I'd shake my fist at the patriot act, and you'd be like "ohh, don't you say bad about my sexy little diddums! I love it so fucking much! I'd like it to slide it's throbbing cock deep up into my guts, and implant it's baby behind my heart!". Or...something like that. Words to those effect. It was pretty close. That's how I remember it.
I love how this was made into a glorious victory for the fascist republicans against the well meaning Democrats who own the majority of both houses as well as the presidency. If you're against it, lay out your cards and let the chips fall where they may. This hemming and hawing is pathetic.
Some of us are in favor of it, some of us aren't. But that's not the point. The point is: Obama and the Democrats crucified Bush and co. for the Patriot Act, criticized it endlessly, and (at one Bush State of the Union address) applauded vigorously the idea of it expiring, yet, when they got into power... ...they renewed it unchanged. I heard on the radio news the other night that the Senate had passed it. What struck me as funny is that the news report did about 2 minutes on the trainer killed by the Killer Whale, 2 minutes on a teenager who might've OD'd on energy drinks, and all of five seconds just before signing off on the renewal of the Patriot Act. Literally, the report was "And the Senate renewed the Patriot Act, disappointing some Democratic lawmakers." No discussion of controversy, dissension, etc. Nothing. Just slipped it in during the final five seconds of the newscast.
you've shown delusion before... I don't think many around here defended the PA... And c'mon... compared to the Gores, Bush was freedom of speech oriented.
Are you saying you can't criticize the left even when they hypocritically support a policy that you're against? The best you can do is to label the demonstration of hypocrisy as "partisan sniping?"
They hate the PATRIOT act. They love it when a Republican President does things kinda like what the PATRIOT act authorizes, so long as it's without any kind of Congressional authorization. It's a subtle--or, perhaps, not so subtle--and rather confusing distinction.
Just one more piece of evidence as proof that the Dems and Reps are equally corrupt and both parties need to go bye-bye.
One reason I never voted in 2004 was that Kerry never said ONE WORD against the Patriot Act or any other losses of freedoms we had. I knew Obama would be business as usual. i think he knows he's a one-termer and doesn't want to look too bad.
Obama is a neocon. The Patriot act after 911 made a lot of sense. However, the better we've done in the war against the terrorist, the less we will need it. It was always supposed to be a short term provision, not eternal law, and yes, there's a hell of a lot of historical precedent for that. I wouldn't support an indefinite extension of the bill, and think that the time for it is winding down. There's been several court rulings that have limited the scope of the bill and I'm fine with that. As this is only a 1 year extension, I'm not all that worked up about it. However, I do find it an indication of incredible hypocrisy on the part of the Democrats that they've authorized it. Clearly they are more concerned about US security now that they are the ruling party. See, I even said that last sentence with a straight face.
Also note there is no coverage whatsoever on this out of the MSM? It was a major hot topic and used to bash Bush repeatedly, but unless you went looking for it in the blogs you wouldn't have known it happened today.
Nope. I just don't happen to think that's the true intent of this thread. But, you can try to turn it around. I won't stand in the way. *Arms behind head, feet up*
Ah. So the truth of a statement is unimportant next to the political context in which it's made? Are you sure you aren't a firmly entrenched element of the partisanship you decry?
