To be honest, I'm not really that surprised. Facebook is a business. And their business is to generate revenue from social networking. Not create controversy.

I'm more concerned with the fact that Muslims are touchy bastards who can't take a joke. Islam is everything I dislike about organized religions... taken to a dangerous extreme.

Its funny that they won't comply to the things Christians feel are offensive, but they cater to Muslims. This double standard by businesses and governments will come back to haunt. I don't think any rules or laws aught to be made for any particular religion. Where does it all end?

But, in this case, Facebook isn't a government agency. They are a private business and can run the business however they see fit.

Hell, if it was my business I'd probably do the same thing if this controversy was cutting into my revenue stream.

    I don't blame them.

And I'm sure that if there was a similar facebook page mocking Christians, the company would take the page down if enough people complained.

So in this case it isn't really a double standard. Just standard operating procedure.

Yeah, because there is no pictures of Jesus on facebook ;) I'm sure there is a Christian who is offended, but that does not matter because they are not Muslim. Yes it is a private company and they are perfectly legal to give preference to one religion. People regurgitate that every time this comes up. Its the fact that this is not right that matters, and sets a horrible precedent that people seem to be turning a blind eye to.

that's so dumb , no offence. i don't think you get the issue here. there are countless things that are "blasphemous" in the eyes of the Christian religion, those things are usually hidden away or done in private(masturbation for example :D)

drawing pix of their prophet is blasphemous. that's all. it's like all those sex groups taht get taken off facebook. it's offensive to some people, who cares how irrational it is.

p.s because so many people complained(an entire fucking country) they caved and took it down.come on, it's not like 2 or 3 people complained and they waved the white flag.

No, that is not all that is blasphemous to muslims, there is a list of things just like any religion. There are many branches of religions where some believe one thing and one another. Who are they any more than any other religion to say what offends them? How can anyone draw a picture of Mohammed when no one knows what he actually looks like? No on can possible draw a picture of him so that blasphemy can never occur. Its just the wedge in the door to a religion-state. Its 100% Un-American.

Anyone know how one that is on Facebook can sever the ties? Forever? That is, remove one's self from it?

Delete your Facebook account if you don't like it.

If it's not worth it to you, then fuck off.

To my knowledge, only myspace allows for permanent deletion. Facebook accounts can only be suspended, either voluntarily or involuntarily.

Not much surprises me about Facebook anymore. It's pretty clear that they view their users less as customers and more as a commodity to be sold.

However, since membership is free, that's pretty much to be expected.

There is a difference, though: Piss off the Muslims, and you're running the risk of getting blocked by a Muslim country, like Pakistan.

Piss off the Christians, you're not going to get blocked by a Christian country, because their governments are secular enough that they either don't give a fuck or they've got other things to worry about (like Portugal's president passing the same-sex marriage law; Portugal's economy is a much bigger issue).

Piss off the Jews, well, they'll just acquire your business (or if it's Israel, they'll just occupy you and send settlers in)!

So how the hell much money could they possibly have lost by not having access to Pakistan? Are there REALLY a lot of ad sells directed at the Pakistani market?

well, if they get a cut from some of the games that solicit for money to get the better stuff - might be a pretty penny (or whatever it is in Pakistan).

That was the other thing I was gonna ask: Pakistan has internet access? I figured everyone there would be using Win 3.11 on 486s if they even had a computer!

Well, there was also a giant group protesting the original page.

Facebook is nothing if not responsive to the demands of its members.

That's the thing. I don't think you can delete it. Unless, of course, they've once again tried modifying things to make it possible without actually making it possible.

Then you can scramble your password and never go back. The point is that your only choice is between not using their service or getting the fuck over it.

If thousands of christians complained and an entire country blocked the website in retaliation?

    Yeah, pretty sure they would.

The irony is that, in my limited experience, ads on Facebook are the least ineffective I've seen. The ROI isn't bad, because you don't pay unless you get clicks, but you just don't get any clicks. I mean think about it, anecdotally. When is the last time you clicked on a Facebook ad? I'd say I average maybe one click a year. They're as bad as TBBS ads (albeit much more targetted). I just don't go to Facebook to shop and I'm more annoyed by the slowdown the ads cause than interested in what they have to offer.

Google works because people come to Google looking for stuff. People don't come to Facebook looking for stuff, they come there to interact with friends. It will be interesting to see if other marketers come to this conclusion and if so, what it'll do to Facebook's strategy.

Facebook has limited appeal for anything other than branding. There are a lot of people who buy impressions on Google now for the same purpose.

Search remains the most effective marketing tool ever implemented, and Facebook is trying to expand its searches - they are integrating pretty heavily with Bing.

Most companies would just waste the time required to set up campaigns on Facebook though.

I have an account on Facebook, and am really wondering why I even have the damn thing as one my bookmarks.

"Look at me! Look at me! Look at me!" is all the shit I see on there. I've already hidden one person because of his constant updates on his Facebook gaming being plastered all over the place. Not to mention all the other countless hides from games that include the player begging for shit.

    ...

Fuck it, bookmarked nuked. I hope they all die.

That's just the thing, innit? Christians can't be bothered to protest in large numbers like that, even on Facebook.

Seems like you're trying to blame others for the general laziness of your peers.
