Another instance where liberals have a clear advantage, seems they're born with the skill.

Seeing it is bad enough. I think the real question is: does anybody really want to hear Rosanne singing it?

    So lemme get this straight.

They were stopped from singing the National Anthem because it's noisy and the Lincoln Memorial - from the steps of which you constantly hear loud jet noise from the traffic going in and out of Reagan National - is a scene of quiet and respect?

    FAIL.

The argument is lost when you try to award special status to the anthem above any other source of human-made noise.

It's a National Monument...they let people visit it to foster a sense of pride and patriotism, it's odd that singing a patriotic song doesn't fit right in.

    Besides, check this out:

    http://www.nps.gov/linc/parkmgmt/lawsandpolicies.htm

There only seems to be one the official site cares about...firearms. Where is the admonishment for silence and reverence?

The only thing going for 1812 Overture are the cannons. Otherwise, meh.

And meh to the Anthem, as well -- my personal opinion is that America the Beautiful would make a much, much better Anthem than Star-Spangled Banner.

From a musical standpoint, it'd b easier to sing. I've been told our current anthem's hard to sing well--I'm assuming because of the wide range of notes in it.

Skin thinks it's been pretty well demonstrated that the Lincoln Memorial is not a "content neutral" area -- they just restrict who can display patriotism there or for what reason. Crowning the Obamessiah? Oh, sure, break out the red white and blue bunting for that one. Regular folks? Not allowed.

Are you suggesting that events haven't been held at the Lincoln Memorial for other Presidential inaugurations?

Or that a Presidential inauguration is a partisan event?

Bear in mind that the tune is also a barsong. And yeah, for strict vocal parts, the range is pretty wide. For people like me, with a full three-octave spread, it isn't much of an issue. For strict basses, tenors, altos and sopranos... it gets pretty low or high for them.

No, Skin was sticking to the one example of a Presidential inauguration that was demonstrated in the thread. Pretty sure there have been more, but Skin didn't bother to look into it, so confined his point to the one demonstrated example.

Not for nothin', but Skin has to assume "ODS" is something you made up to describe a general lack of reverence for the Great Mulatto Hope.

However, the right has been getting extraordinarily good at it of late. Which is odd, since I thought liberals were supposed to be the whiny, easily offended ones.

Does anyone even sing it "as written" anymore?
It seems to be just a jumping-off point for wild vocal theatrics most of the time.

The Simpson's got it right.......before a ball game started the song went on + on until it was too dark to play!

Don't care if it's difficult to sing or not- leave the goddamn national anthem alone, and stop trying to subvert it by preceding it by America the Beautiful at sporting events!!!!!!

Uh... yeah. While I think America the Beautiful should be the anthem instead of Star-Spangled Banner, don't do both in a sporting event. Do the anthem, or don't do it at all. I'm there to watch a game, not worship Uncle Sam's dick :jayzus:

That's the problem with letting "vocalists" sing it. They turn just one note into 73 notes all over the fuckin' place. Probably the only acceptable instance of that was when Whitney Houston did it that way, but she also added the comedy bonus of dressing up like Aunt Jemimah for the occasion.

EDIT: Corrected, was thinking of the wrong negress.

Singing in a group must always be considered a "demonstration?" What kind of stupidity is that?

And what the fuck is "content neutral?"

Sounds like utter stupidity. Pretty funny too considering Lincoln had strong views on things, did controversial things and was anything but "neutral."

Outside monuments are *not* libraries and do not need "respectful silence."

Sounds to me that the Park Police just don't want to risk REAL demonstrations and have clamped down on anything that might remotely resemble one. I have news for them. I'm not keen on some demonstrations myself, but as Americans, we have the RIGHT to free speech (and to demonstrate, as long as we don't get violent.) They need to get over themselves.
