Why didn't I have that haircut when I had the chance!
It's not the actual theme to the movie, (which I also liked) but I've never been more moved in a theater seat than when this was playing: [yt=Reveal]kC9OlPpdy1E&feature=fvst[/yt] And of course, I can't really let this thread go by without submitting: [yt=Xanadu!]7m1UWSD-FaA[/yt]
Say what you will about Lucas, the prequels and the "special" editions, but I doubt any movie theme has been as iconic as John Williams' Star Wars. Even the non-scifi geeks recognize it immediately.
As far as movie soundtracks go you could do far worse than - The Blues Brothers Purple Rain Something Wild Cocktail Maximum Overdrive Yeah the movies "Cocktail" and "Maximum Overdrive" suck, I'm only talking about the soundtracks.
The short list for my favorite movie soundtracks (in no particular order since I love them all): Star Wars (I refuse to call it Ep. 4) Conan The Barbarian Star Trek: The Motion Picture Starship Troopers Gladiator The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
The use of music in "Apocalypse Now" has become iconic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx7XNb3Q9Ek&feature=related
In terms of association with the movie's main character, the Bond and Terminator themes are up there.
Lately I've been on a John Barry kick. They're all great, but the one that keeps standing out from all the others is Raise the Titanic. Not such a great movie, but terrific music: [yt="opening credits"]ENpQiivoBLQ[/yt] [yt="1980 release trailer"]5Il7Hub5Vqs[/yt]
The first Mortal Kombat movie had KMFDM. The first Matrix had some Rage Against the Machine, but to be honest I'd like Rage better without any vocals. The Doors is an obvious choice. Natural Born Killers had all kinds of crazy shit on it. Nine Inch Nails, Cowboy Junkies, L7. Then theres the first Crow, with Brandon Lee. Has the only Cure song I've ever liked on it. Plus more Rage, Violent Femmes, Helmet, Pantera, and a bunch of other one-off shit I never really heard about again.
Yeah, after the Graduate (or tied) I'd put Grosse Point Blank for overall soundtrack. As for theme, imho it's gonna be hard to beat the Godfather for a theme that most conjures up the movie.
Lock the thread.......the discussion (how could there have been one at all) is over! Bow down and witness the glory: Every.....single.....song is great. The movie wasn't too bad, but the soundtrack is off the scale!
Well since we're drifting towards whole soundtracks and not just themes, i reiterate ST:TMP and Xanadu. Let me add American Graffiti, Eddie and the Cruisers, and Good Morning Vietnam
I've said it before here: "Superman: The Movie" was John Williams' best work. Before it came "Star Wars" and after, "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Both great, iconic works, but at least as far as the main title, neither can beat "Superman".
I have to admit that when I hear the Main Title from Superman, I can't help but to stand a little taller and walk a little faster, or just do everything with a little more enthusiasm. It's fucking awesome.

^Would have been among my Top 10, if I had to pick. I love movie music, but I tend to have favorite composers rather than being limited to a single flick. Hans Zimmer can do no wrong. Ditto James Horner, Jerry Goldsmith, some of the classics like Nino Rota, Maurice Jarre, Bill Conti...I could go on. Honestly can't pick one film, but of the few scores I listen to again and again, yes, Crimson Tide, but let's not forget Lawrence of Arabia.
Y'know, it's fucking wild, and I always thought I hallucinated this as a kid, but Richard Donner even points it out in the commentary, but somehow, freakily, the instruments actually SAY the fucking word "Superman!".
Best synth-Beethoven number from Clockwork Orange. [yt=The Ninth!]holNYFvrlDQ[/yt] (The theme to my school shooting that alas, never came off)
^ Clockwork Orange for sure. I really enjoy The Last Of The Mohicans soundtrack as well. Very underrated movie, just like the soundtrack.
Stargate and Independence Day both had good orchestral scores. It's not the theme, but "Stealing the Enterprise" from TSFS is one of my favorite pieces of movie music. Overall soundtrack has to go to Empire Records (the complete soundtrack, not just the maddeningly thin selection of the music they put into the official album). Of the official albums only, Forrest Gump gets the nod. Orchestral soundtrack, overall (not just one or two songs)... probably The Empire Strikes Back. Best theme: Superman, for sure.
