Re: Dont pay for fire service, watch your hosue burn

There is so much odd about this, I dunno where to start.

First...the place wasn't a house...it was a double-wide mobile home. This is not the kind of home any sane person would live in and mess around with fire insurance. It takes almost no time at all for a fire to completely gut a trailer of any size.

His homeowner's insurance...apparently has a rider requiring him to have fire protection...yet the carrier never enforces it and pays up full benefits? Not a smart business plan. This insurance apparently is only enough to pay for his mortgage and nothing else.

I find it a bit odd...when we bought our double-wide we had to get a mobilehome loan..mortgages are not usually given for this type of home...maybe that is a state thing though.

In any event...the bank that has his mortgage and the insurance company covering him...neither ever checks to make sure he's covered? That seems strange.

The fire was started out in a field...apparently there was a lot of time before it got to the home. Why didn't the homeowner hook up the hose or start running buckets with his kids? Hell, what sort of asshole is he that none of his neighbors came to help? Even the ones whose own property was threatened didn't try and help....we know they were home..they called for help themselves!

We don't really know our neighbors very well, but when Zel came home to find their porch on fire he ran in got our extinguisher and took care of it while I called 911. Most people, I think, wouldn't do nothing unless they were really bastards.

Also...it's illegal to burn trash outside in TN. No one seems to be talking about that part...except apostle briefly up there. That fire had no business even being set and may cost them another $25,000 in fines.

The missing animals...people keep assuming they are dead. They had plenty of time to get away and probably ran for their lives. I really hope that is what happened.

    Just weird, weird shit.

So the take-away I have from this discussion is clarification that Lefties:
-Don't think people should be allowed to spend their own money how they see fit,
-Don't think people should be held accountable for any actions they take or fail to take,
-Think it is somehow fair to take money from people who have "too much" and give it to "the less fortunate", and
-Think Government is the best way to solve all these problems. :marathon:

OK, maybe my sympathy is not the best standard to apply here. But if I would grudgingly allow him to benefit at all, the dude should throw a fucking ticker-tape parade.

Re: Dont pay for fire service, watch your hosue burn

All our fire departments are 100% volunteer here in northern Jersey. I toss a couple of quarters in their buckets whenever they have a fund raising drive, and I sure as shit expect them to show up when my house is on fire.

But the $75 a year extortion payment is just that - extortion. It's no better than paying the Mob for protection. The town either needs to go all volunteer, or start taking it out in taxes.

Doctors don't get to pick and choose what patients they treat, and firefighters should have no say in what fires they are allowed to fight. Either do your fucking job or get into another line of work.

No, they're not. Sure they may get the occasional Federal Grant, but 99.999999999999999999% of my Municipal Fire Department's funding comes from local property and sales taxes. The county and state contribute not one red cent. In fact, we pay the state a lot of money for certification and accreditation.

The PD is the same way. We have one Federal Grant right now. They paid for a few new radios. That's it.

In fact, if it wasn't for a more than generous donation from a local industry, we wouldn't even have a hurst tool right now.

No, here's the take away, you can't be allowed to think anymore.

Re: Dont pay for fire service, watch your hosue burn

You seem to miss the facts of the case. This fire dept in this case is a town fire dept. The guy whose trailer burnt down does not live in the town or pay the taxes the town residents pay to support their fire dept.

The fire dept offer a service to the people outside of the town for an annual fee prepaid. This idiot didn't pay it. He does not get the service. This is very basic. What is the issue?

If you don't pay your doctor, he does not have to see you. He or she can tell you to fuck off and go somewhere else.

Why? Because direct payment is too unpleasant for you, or it would cost more than the property tax on your corrugated metal shack?

    They should be able to.

"*gasp* Did he really just say that! The horror! :swoon: "

They did their job. What they did not do is go next door and provide the same service for free.

I guess you missed the part where the fire department involved was operating outside of its actual coverage area, and the $75 fee is for people who live outside the city but want fire protection anyway.

Re: Dont pay for fire service, watch your hosue burn

This is an fairly long thread and I am lazy. I do not know if this was mentioned. EMS workers are severely underpaid. As an EMT I never made anything close to the $48K estimated by Jenee. $23K is the most I was ever paid and yes I have taken into consideration the cost of living and differentials that vary from state to state.
While off duty EMS workers are often covered by a Good Samaritan law, these men were not off duty. If anything went wrong they could be sued for negligence and would not have been covered by the malpractice insurance because they would have to act outside of their employment contract for the sake of this cheap bastard.
I know what some of you may be thinking. " Then they should work for free and do it right!" I know of several cases in which a coworker acted within his scope of practice and the patient/victim or his/her family insisted that negligence had allowed the death or injury. Put that in your bongs and smoke it.

It has been offered. If your host won't accept any compensation, that's the end of it. It's only a problem when you take by force what otherwise would not have been offered.

I pay a yearly fee for TBBS, although that's just for a few extra perks. I'd pay a yearly fee for WF too, if Lanz ever needed it. I like to carry my own weight whenever possible. Hell, Starscape is free, but that's because ad revenues pay for the host, and right now, with Spamicon going on, Google's probably happier than a pig in shit.

How, pray tell, can a city levy a tax on unincorporated non-city property?

How many doctors have you known? They most certainly can and do.

In this case however the guy doesn't live in the city. I do agree the county should have the fire "tax" placed into the property tax but there may be other reasons it's not such as there is no county wide fire service.

Renters should have renters insurance. Even now in areas where there is fire coverage if the apartment building gets gutted you the renter are screwed.

Happened plenty of times where I live and I'm sure where you live too.....

On top of that you could probably sue the landlord for not carrying out his obligations (unless the lease says you have to pay the fee).

What if two next-door neighbors pay, and the fire spreads from one house to the next, and then to a third neighbor's house? The third neighbor paid as well, but by now the fire is much larger and harder - and more expensive - to control.

    Shit happens.

That's why you have insurance. If you can prove the one guy who didn't pay was the cause of the fire then you can probably sue him.

Personally, I have insurance on my apartment. I'm required to by my apartment. It costs about $375 a year, and I would have it whether I was required to or not.

What if they only piad $0.21 per day?

As for your analogy about the land lord / renter. Huge difference. The landlord is a commercial operation and therefore can be forced to pay. What about the renters who landlords havent been making the payments on the property for the last year and the tenants only get a 1 day eviction notice? What they? Should the tenants be able to squat?

Nope this thread is about taking personal responsibility and those that dont crying "poor widdle me". Ya know the ass clowns that always expect someone else to take care of them even though they are capable of doing so.
