Never played on a DS, but that controller looks too big and bulky for game play.

Warning! Warning! Danger Will Robinson! We are entering Epic Fail zone!
Looks like no taking it on the go like we were talking about in the other thread.

So what exactly is the point of it? You can't take it that far from the tv, but you can play with the tv off.
Um why wouldn't I just turn the tv on?

This sounds like it would have had a market 20 years ago when families had one tv and you couldn't play your game cause Dad was watching TV, but now???

That is a godawful name for a console. But, then again, so was the Wii.

The touch screen would be handy if you're playing something like Madden, where you could enter your plays without someone else in the room being able to see what you're doing.

I don't know about this one. Nintendo needed something that would be a substantial leap frog over the PS3 & 360. The Wii U is barely more powerful than either device. So if I have either a 360 or PS3 already, why would I buy a Wii U? All third party games will more than likely come to all three consoles and not for nothing, the 1st party Nintendo games to date don't really appeal to core gamers. Nintendo needs some hardcore exclusives to sell the Wii U.

With that said, they have some of the best game developers on the planet. If anyone can pull it off, it's Nintendo, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

I have a feeling this is going to be Ninendo's Dreamcast.

Guess it'll be interesting to see Mario Kart for Playstation and Xbox.

I don't know. I watched their whole press conference, and I think they have a smart strategy going forward.

They are the leader of this console generation, despite the inferior graphics. They are making money out the ass on hardware and software.

And a lot of hardcore gamers own a Wii... along with either the PS3 or 360. Because many of those hardcore gamers are also old-school gamers. They may not play their Wii very much, but they bought one and they probably bought all the key titles. And that is all Nintendo needed from them for this generation.

Trust me, hardcore gamers will buy a Nintendo system if it has HD Zelda, Mario, and Metroid. The casual gamers who own a Wii and haven't upgraded will probably gravitate towards a new Wii rather than a PS3/360 if the price is competitive.

Graphics are becoming less important with every generation. The Wii and the rise of downloadable games, casual games, and social network games proves that. We're already at the point of damn-near photorealistic graphics... where else can you go at this point? Nintendo is bringing their platform up to parity on the graphics side and they are better than anyone at innovating gameplay in other ways...

I think the key area that Nintendo needs to work on is their online component. They haven't yet revealed anything about the online capabilities of the new console (it is still a year a way) but it needs to be a full online experience. They can't half-ass it anymore.

I remember reading some article last year where the head of Nintendo said his main competitor in the future wouldn't be Sony or Microsoft, but Apple.

In light of that, the new controller makes perfect sense.

Nintendo's stock took a dump today, analysts are blaming the "Wii U", as it seems to be very poorly received so far.

They already had one. It was called the Gamecube.

Nintendo has always made a profit with their consoles. I doubt this will be any different.

I think you might be confused. If the Gamecube had been Nintendo's Dreamcast, then there would never have been a Wii, let alone a Wii U.

HINT: The Dreamcast was Sega's last console before it realized it couldn't compete in the hardware business.

Nintendo was on the verge of doing exactly that after the Gamecube. Then they thought "Instead of trying to compete, let's just do something completely out in left field and see if it works." Basically the Wii was a Hail Mary play that paid off for them.

But they did make the Wii, and now the Wii U. Ergo, the Gamecube was not the Dreamcast.

Ugh I hate Wii's, everything on them seems aimed at the under 5's and women who need exercise.

That would explain the subpar specs over the last 2 generations.

All consoles have subpar specs compared to the mighty PC :D

That doesn't mean they are bad. And just making a console with bad specs doesn't, by any means, guarantee that you'll have profits.

Actually, the Game Cube was considered to be on par with the original XBox... and the PS2 had overall weaker graphics than the other two.

Compare the Game Cube version of Resident Evil 4 with the PS2 version. The Game Cube version had better textures and was much sharper.

Yet the PS2 was the far-and-away leader of that generation of consoles.

The DS had nowhere near the graphical power of the PSP but blew Sony's handheld out of the water in terms of sales.

I was referring to the Wii and Wii U. Of course, all consoles have inferior specs to PC's, but they are dedicated devices and designed to keep cost at a minimum. Nintendo will never make a console so powerful that they'd have to sell it at a loss for a year or so, however, this is common practice with Playstation And Microdoft because they keep an eye on the future growth of the console. Nintendo doesn't have that sort of risk in them. Another thing is that Sony and Microsoft have additional revenue due to royalties from third party developers... Which is virtually non-existent on Nintendo consoles. I think this is because as a corporation, Nintendo doesn't embrace third party games on their systems. They want it all for themselves. This is why you won't see titles like Batman Arkham City and Bioshock Infinite on the Wii U for at least six months after they are on PS3 & 360. They learned about the Wii U the same time we did.

Eh... I don't know. When I got my PS3, I downloaded a shitload of old games like Joust, Pac-Man and Space Invaders... I gladly gave up the $5 for a piece of nostalgia. Sony's in for. Rude awakening if they think they can pull that shit again on the PS4 when it comes out.

I say this because Nintendo has lived off of Mario and Zelda for the last 25 years or so. If they want to remain relevant in the future of console development, they need some new IP. If not, then they desperately need third party developers to embrace what they are doing... and onto of that, they need to win over hardcore gamers again, which is very doable, but right now, the Wii has left a bad taste in their mouths.

    I wouldn't count Nintendo out.

I remember in 2005 or 2006 when they debuted the Revolution/Wii at E3, everybody was like :wtf:

And as it turned out, the Wii outsells the Xbox360 and PS3 almost 2 to 1.

    Cha-ching!
