First the whole "let's institutionalize discrimination against transgendered people" thing, now this? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110601/ap_on_hi_te/us_password_sharing_crackdown Don't have a party and decide to watch Netflix, or you're going to jail for a year.
How many times can an account be logged into at the same time? You think that would be the most basic of security measures.
Yeah seriously. If Netflix doesn't want people sharing accounts, then let Netflix put a limit on computers or IP addresses that can be connected per day, or make it so only one person can log in at a time. I have no idea why the government is getting involved here. :stare:
The root of the problem here. As usual, getting government involved means that the "fix" is often worse than the problem. TKO's right. Netflix could solve this problem on its own without criminalizing the whole thing. Kinda makes me wonder what the real issue is here.
The real issue is what it always is....$$$$. Simply stopping the log-ins won't criminalize the behavior and give them a chance to collect damages, not to mention the hope that this will force people to buy subscriptions.
I'm told the number is the same as however many discs are on your subscription. So if you've got a two- or three-disc-at-a-time Netflix account, then you can watch on two or three devices at once. Apparently, Netflix wants them both to really belong to you.
this is all the Nashville entertainment industry folks worried about losing money, and as per usual instead of being creative about developing new revenue streams they try to block or create stricter enforcement of access to their stuff. I understand it's their livelihood but this will only lead to small time folks getting in trouble, while the real pirates get away.
This is an easily solved problem by the market. Really, you'd have to be a moron to share your login - whoever you share it with gets your credit card info!
Uh, no, they don't. They get the last four digits. Point? This is a problem government has no business messing with.
Good thing they have "conservatives" in charge...no telling what kind of idiocy liberals would have come up with. Of course, this kind of statist non sense is par for the course for republicans these days. It's happening in Florida too...sorry I digress. This is just an example of the inherent conservatism of the entertainment industry (when it comes to innovation). First they panicked over TV, then it was home taping, then they shit their collective pants over VCR's. Never mind that every one of those innovations ended up expanding their income by multiples of multiples; their reaction is always "how can we stop this?" Instead of trying to criminalize people who want to actually use their product, why aren't they trying to figure out how to milk more money out of them?
Like, for example, by offering "family" subscriptions. Want to get a subscription for you and up to 5 other people? That's $15/mo. (or whatever) more than a single subscription, with any logins after those 5 costing $5/mo (or whatever.) It can be done.
Then again it was Tipper Gore and her cronies who brought in the music rating system and other stupid shit as well. Sorry but this isn't a left or right issue no matter how much you want to make it. It's a moron issue and if Democrats were in charge of the TN government they would have done the same stupid shit.
Because the Tennessee legislature has all of a sudden decided to take a page out of the Fed's book and stick their STD covered dicks in everyone's business, necessity aside. Good thing we're both getting the Hell out. (at least you are, I'm still up in the air)
Touche! Tipper led the idiot brigade in her day. Good intentions and the road to Hell...what a combination. Right now the Republicans have more power and that leads to a greater chance to pass stupid laws. God knows the democrats did plenty of stupid shit in Florida when they had control. Of course, it does add spice to the story that the Republicans claim they want to support individual freedom, then turn around and pull this shit, but you're absolutely right that this kind of assholery is bullshit no matter who's behind it. ETA: it's only fair to point out that the entertainment industry, like every special interest will try to buy off whomever is in charge regardless of party and Democrats are just as corruptible as Republicans
People cause me emotional distress when they post things I don't like! They should go to jail for that! I have a right not to be unhappy! All you mean people, stop trolling me! Stop trolling anyone else, either! You're causing me emotional distress, and that's against the law!
I'm sure Lord Obama is taking notes from this state. He's always looking for new and creative ways to assume power and control over the people.
For the partisans out there, like me , the bill passed the House and Senate without a single "Nay" vote from either party: House Senate Good luck trying to enforce it. You'd think any measures taken to do so would have taken care of the problem without needing the legislation anyway.
I'm starting to think there should be penalties to legislators when a bill they passed is struck down as unconstitutional by the court system.
Christ. What are we going to have to do, put a disclaimer on WF that by joining the site you know you will be exposed to offensive images, language and personal insults regardless of your local laws and that you are willingly exposing yourself to potential graphic and offensive materials and hold no one else responsible for that exposure but yourself?? It sickens me that some people want a passionless, cotton candy, fake world where no one is sincere or honest and everyone fears what might distress someone else 24 hours a day because they might end up in jail or in debt.
This is where we need the Federal government involved. All the different states greed is out to destroy the internet. If all those laws were to get passed there would be no value to the internet at all. We cannot have 50 different states coming up with laws for something that spans the entire world. I don't even thing national governments should have that power. This goes right to the heart of freedom. If we, or anybody else, starts placing limits on the internet, then its only a matter of time before its only a propaganda tool for those who create the laws. Its similar to the US mail in many ways. For centuries the states have wanted to place taxes on mail orders from out of state. The constitution article 1, section 9 "No Tax or Duty shall be laid on Articles exported from any State." This pretty much prohibits one state from taxing things in another. How then can any state create a law affecting the internet and all states(+the rest of the world). I think the internet should be only limited by agreed international law with consent of a vast majority of the affected nations. Who is Tennessee to place internet limits upon the entire world? I think they forget themselves in their position in the world and show themselves as rubes.
