I'm watching this on C-SPAN this morning to see what's being said about the debt ceiling negotiations and just saw Sheila Jackson Lee and some of her colleagues on the left speak about the evil Republican voter oppression laws (you know, the ones where people actually have to show a state-issued identification card...radical policy, I know). One of her lackeys actually went to the front podium, made his speech about how this horrible idea is being drummed up all over the country by Republicans to keep themselves in power, and then ended with "and that's real, yo." I nearly threw up.
BTW...It was Hank Johnson, D-Georgia. He just got up again during 1 minute speeches and concluded with "that's the real deal Holyfield."
Can I emphasize NORTH Georgia is proudly represented by this man who also asked if all those people would tip over Guam.
I got the impression that "boobtuba" had no ability to change the program showing on his/her/its television. Normally, when most people see something they don't like, they turn it off.
They make web browsers with back buttons and forums where you can hover this thing called a mouse pointer over the title to preview it, as well.
Sure, I'm willing to support state-issued identification cards, so long as those who are denied the right to vote without it are counted against the state's population for purposes of representation as the 14th amendment requires.
I'm saying that any state who willfully denies a person the right to vote should have its apportionment reduced accordingly. The states should not be allowing non-citizens to vote, but should also not be receiving representation based on non-citizens or citizens who are not allowed to vote for reasons that are constitutionally questionable at best. So basically, you can keep your state ID cards, but for every person who shows up to vote and you turn away for reasons of citizenship or lack of "sufficient identification", you lose in equal numbers for apportionment.
As far as I can tell, the only folks that would be turned away would be folks under the age to vote or someone who just moved there and didn't meet the residency requirements (in which case they'd probably be voting absentee or voted early) or .... they are not citizens. Not necessarily illegal. Those with green cards or student visas can't vote either.
I has nothing to do with my comfort, jackass. The point I was making was the lack of respect this idiot from Georgia was showing to the US House.
Because yelling "you lie" at the President of the United States during a speech is the height of respect.
A state that disenfranchises its voters should not be rewarded by those same individuals counting towards its representation.
Please, the US House is disrespected every second John Boehner steps foot onto it, the man used to hand out checks from Tobacco Lobbyists on the floor of the House. Yelling out slang is barely even comparable.
Neither ass nor elephant is capable of showing any respect in the capitol building. We should nuke it from orbit. Its the only way to be sure.
Statistically speaking, low-income people and minorities are far more likely to not have a state-issued ID. Simultaneously, the evidence of large-scale voter fraud of the type many Republicans claim happens without ID laws is scanty at best.
Statistically speaking, that is because most people ineligible to vote are low income minorities. AKA illegal aliens.
You're supporting changing the constitutionally mandated requirement of a decennial census based on a really questionable reading of the 14th amendment, my friend.
I find it interesting that you equate, "expecting reasonable proof of eligibility to vote" and "disenfranchising it's voters". I guess I kind of agree. It follows that we should start dismantling Federal and State infrastructures which effectively obstruct law abiding citizens as they exercise their Constitutionally guaranteed rights to purchase firearms, no? Seriously, who needs an ID when a handshake and an , "I'm a good guy" will easily suffice.
That's not a questionable reading at all, the purpose of it was designed to prevent states from disenfranchising certain groups of people. Just because it's poor people and not black people doesn't mean it doesn't fit.
For much the same reason you'd be embarrassed if the PM said, 'suck my cock mothafucka' when he disagreed with the opposition (well, maybe you wouldn't be). Or wore his pants around mid-thigh, no belt, wares exposed to remove any remaining doubts o' whatch yo dealin wit.
