Did I see it on another board? I thought it was here?

Anyway, assuming it hasn't been posted...

There's an old C&H strip floating around the net which says, basically, "Calvin nailed the whole OWS" thing 15 years ago!"

Actually, he does, but not in the way they think:

Here's one source for the claim he's got their backs in the streets of NY:

    http://slyoyster.hypervocal.com/che...cinctly-explains-occupy-wall-street-movement/

But here's the kicker - the lefties are essentially saying "Calvin is showing us how these evil rich guys played all of us to get rich and thus why we should be mad"

But that overlooks the fact that Calvin didn't make a sale! he set up a flawed business with a bad product and a hopeless price point and he went, or will go, completely out of business.

Which is what the free market does to a bad business.

IF by some strange circumstance he DOESN'T go out of business, or not quickly enough, it will be because he was in fact subsidized and in that case the fault is not with the businessman but the government.

Which is a point we can all agree on.

I imagine lefties think that C&H shows the failings of a free market. It actually shows that it DOESN'T work the way they imagine it does.

Yes. I've seen it tossed out and heard the left wing choir sing in more than one place (and folks I know personally to be hard left)

    i'm not speculating on that.

no one you ever heard of, people who post on other forums where I visit. if I called their names you wouldn't know them.

i could list you off half the trans-folks on my facebook friends list who are hard-core lefties and say stuff like that all the time, but you wouldn't know any of them.

Only a couple of them are even names you could look up.

I would think the context of my post is pretty bleeding obvious: "the lefties who are passing this around and commenting on it in my presence"

I have no fucking idea what, say, Bill Maher thinks about it.

I don't think it's THAT difficult to infer my intent.

News flash. Leftists aren't the only ones circulating that comic.

Of course it's simplistic and with only bullet points and sound bites to carry "the message".

But, that's what comics do. And, the Righties to the same damn thing.

Nova, if you're FB friends with Volpone or other WF'ers, you saw the C&H on FB after Volp shared it off my share. :diacanu:

Re: Where's the Calvin and Hobbes thread?

Well, I suppose if you ignore the last frame of the comic and Watterson's political philosophy as showcased in his entire body of work, you can pretend it says something else...

As I hinted at on FB, the strip is as much about the Tea Party as it is about Occupy... .

Because in the Mirror Universe, there actually was a Tea Party prior to 1995.

:bang: Jesus, you can be tedious and sanctimonious at times.

Because in the Mirror Universe there was actually a Occupy prior to 1995.

    Choke yourself.

As I hinted at on FB, the strip applies as much to the Tea Party as it does to Occupy... .

    Happy? Or just glad?

I ended up removing you from my Facebook listing because out of the 150 or so on there you were the one always posting annoying Right/Left argument statuses.

I realize that some people are trying to bring up a point with this thread. What you've missed is despite Watterson's philosophy, along with that cartoon being 20 years old is the following:
    It's funny.
It's a frakking cartoon, deal with it, you humorless sacks of flesh. Jayzus.

Watterson is a pretty avid anti-corporatists. He considers himself an 'artiste' and refused to even license the characters for merchandising, despite the vast wealth that would have brought him. Hell, he stopped giving autographs when he learned people were reselling said autographs for cash.

Little doubt which side of the fence he's on. However, he hasn't said boo about it, also being a recluse, so it doesn't really matter does it?

And in that cartoon he was taking a shot at employees too.

of course it is. The all were. We really don't start threads for the purpose of saying "this 20 year old strip is pretty funny" do we?

Re: Where's the Calvin and Hobbes thread?

Happy that the only way you can make your argument stick is by going back in time and establishing the Tea Party during the run of Calvin and Hobbes (and, again, completely ignoring Bill Watterson's political philosophy)? Disappointed, actually. :(

Also, haven't seen the Facebook entry, so if that somehow magically alters the timeline, you'll have to provide a link.

Too bad that analogy doesn't hold with Wall Street.

Here's the problem with investment banking and Wall Street in general: it doesn't create anything. It hasn't for decades. Between derivatives, credit default swaps and the securitization of shitty credit products, the capital markets have become one giant casino built largely on lies, fraud and Ponzi schemes.

And this isn't a left- or right-wing problem. It's a human nature problem. Greed is the modus operandi of the new American economy and there is plenty of blame to go around, from corporations to government to unions. So long as you morons keep voting Democrat or Republican it's not going to get better.

well yeah, but if you take it to that level then it never applied from the left of center point of view either.

to elaborate, the places I was seeing this turn up, except for Volpone, were left of center people who were essentially saying "this is what the Wall Street people are mad about"

According to what WAB said (which i do not particularly disagree with) it no more illustrates their legitimate complaints than it defeats them - as it relates to the banking industry.

Which is to way, Watterson's point here, well made though it was, had nothing to do with the moneychangers.
