I'm beginning to wonder if the debacle going on in the European Union could lead to civil war. My assumption is based on the American Civil War and what happened when member states tried to leave our own union do to economic circumstances.

    Discuss!

(I understand that this discussion is regarding an event that is honestly quite unlikely. However, I do not believe that it would be entirely impossible for war to erupt) )

Europe isn't a country, despite the typical American's grasp of geography. So "civil war" doesn't really apply.

War between EU member states? It doesn't seem likely. Who would go to whom, and over what?

Well, I hate to break it to you genius, but there IS a sizable contingent of European Union citizens who DO think that Europe is, effectively, a "country".

France, Belgium and Germany (and possibly England, dragging Ireland along) will ally, much to everyone's shock, as they go on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge through the Balkans.

In other news, there is a possibility that Belgium will split in two.

Doesn't matter -- Flanders or Walloony would still be bigger than Monaco, Vatican, San Marino, Andorra or Lichtenstein :bigass:

    Recent joke:

A Spaniard, an Italian, and a Greek walk into a bar. They order drink after drink until dawn, getting totally drunk. Who pays the tab?

The EU has a rapid reaction force, for one.

Secondly, in our civil war, the states raised and provided men.

Even if a "civil war" was a possibility (and I don't even remotely see that), how would such a force operate if its members were from opposing states?
I just don't see that happening. I can't see a generation of European men marching off to war to...what?...straighten out the budgetary messes of other EU countries?

In any event, I'm not sure how a military action would accomplish anything. At this point, the states that are most likely to break the union are the wealthier ones who find themselves tied to weaker, failing ones.

Even if Greece and Italy could raise an army, do you think they could compel the Germans to stay and finance their failed bureaucracies?

The munitions in this war are euros. The Federation of German Wholesale, Foreign Trade and Services (BGA) reports that Germany's trade surplus will reach one trillion euros this year, and climb to 1.14 trillion euros in 2012. Germany will make up almost 10% of world trade. It seems like Germany is winning this war.

There will be no "Civil War" in the sense of National Armies/Navies firing live shots at each other. You can let go of your dick.

However, there will be more than a little maneuvering amongst the various banks, bond holders, and governments. They'll be, desperately, trying to exert pressure on the various "others" to gain advantage and/or exert their will.

Or, how will this be different from any other Friday? :marathon:

Indeed. The Fuhrer-Mistress AnGela recently commented about this at a private luncheon at a meeting with other European leaders. Please don't tell her I told anyone she said this.

What I posted last night was posted by talking into my iPhone and then posting when I pulled over. In other words, quickly.

You have pissed off, powerful nations who will want their loans to be paid off one day, and you have less powerful nations who want to leave the Euro so they can control their own currency, devalue their debts, and make them easier to pay off. They also want to be able to do things to make them more competitive globally that the EU prevents them from doing.

So, if they try to leave the EU, the question is "What will happen?" Will the powerful nations say goodbye to trillions in bailouts that might be paid back the equivalent of $.10 on the dollar? Will they let the nations leave peacefully?

In the US, it was believed states had the right to leave the Union. Why would Europe be any different than we are with its EU? Honestly, our nation was a collection of states until the civil war - the same way the EU is now. And you have leaders in Brussels trying to consolidate and increase their power, just like we had and have had since in DC.

This is not a dumb shit thread, unless you're too big a dumb shit to see the parallels.

"Daily Mail". The UK's chief scaremongering tabloid (and favourite of Midnight Retard).

    'Nuff said.

As for your thread, I can't imagine that it is anything other than a joke as I don't think that even the most stupid America would think that Europe is a country that is about to go to war with itself.

Economic collapse coupled with diverging national interests is a very dangerous combination.

It is a dumbshit thread because:-

    1) Europe is not a country; and

    2) Even if a member state were to unilaterally leave the Eu it would not give rise to war since it would both not be cost effective for any country during an economic collapse, would have no obvious goal and wouldn't be supported by the citizens of the member states involved.

    ....and...

    3) I can't believe I am having to point this out. You're not that stupid FFS.

Again, I will state this: The US was a union of states prior to the civil war. Some thought it was more than that, some thought it less. The Civil War cemented ONE SIDE'S opinion of what the union was.

Europe is so dead on similar, it is ridiculous. It's just like the US prior to the civil war.
