Wouldn't a better example of black clothing be jeans hanging down at their knees and $200 sneakers???
"African American"? What is this, the 1970s? And this is America, not the UK, dammit! The period goes inside the quotes!
Grammar and punctuation aren't always logical, and there's a rule for this, but I can't remember it ATM.
My guess is that some teacher thought "Hm, what else is African? I know, leopards and tigers!" And it was all downhill from there.
Maybe this will help: http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/quotation-marks-with-periods-and-commas.aspx
I used to have a by-God just got off the jet (can't say "boat" for obvious reasons) African on my crew. He lived in a big coastal city in Senegal his whole life. Every now and then someone would ask him about "jungle" animals and he'd find the question very amusing. But he could tell you all about big ass traffic jams during his daily commute! Anyway, he's a typical fucking immigrant. They are all the same IMO. He came here with limited English skills, stayed out of trouble, worked his ass off, and became a big success and model citizen. :can: BTW the dude can SWIM HIS ASS OFF! All his childhood buddies could. They played volleyball at the beach and swam for recreation.
That would be Dakar or Saint-Louis. Those are the only big cities on the coast. I've been in both of them. Pretty close to desert around Saint-Louis, and not much better around Dakar. Even in the southern part of Senegal, you won't find real jungle. Not the kind that would allow for elephants, giraffes and that kind of thing. That would be Dakar then, most likely.
While I can't really say that "I can't imagine someone being upset about this," I don't really consider this a big deal. It was obviously just poorly worded.
I lost it at Unicornbooty. Yea, this is one of those "it sounded good at the time" moments for the teacher. Another tidbit from further up the ladder.... From back then? Ok, so loincloths and animal skins? What?
Fair to say all of our ancestors wore skins at one time or another, but nobody's suggesting white people wear them to celebrate...well, anything, except maybe some obscure Klingon holiday.
