Now that a dead guy is going on tour with live rappers, and digital special effects are at the point of being photo-realistic, do we really need Chris Pine, zach Quinto, and Karl Urban blaspheming three of the greatest characters of all time?

What about a nu-Trek that isn't really nu-Trek, but zombie trek using digital versions of the old actors?

You wouldn't even have to claim it was 'live action.' The Final Fantasy movie (now old by any FX standard) was a clear technology demonstrator when it came to showing how lifelike animated characters could be made to look, Plus, when you go that route, things like zero-gee environments and such are easier to create.

So, what say you? Should we see a True Phase II version of old Trek that is true to the canon, or continue with this "Star Wars - i -cized" dreck that includes First Class Midshipmen being awarded command of a ship of the line ?

My vote is thus: Bring back digital TOS characters with appropriate voice talents and flush the Abramsverse back into quantum oblivion!

The technology being used has nothing to do with the type of story being told. Give them the ability to have virtual actors that looked like the original and you will just get an original looking Kirk acting like nu-Kirk.

Given the potential, I would love to be a descendant of The Shat, Nimoy, or hell, ANY significant actor on a popular TV series! Just like the estates of Elvis and Michael Jackson continue to pull in the :$:, imagine the lucrative bucks the estates of actors in classic roles/series could pull in long-term!

Nu-Nu Trek, w/ digital Shat and Spock? :techman:
Digi-Sean Connery as the all-time James Bond? :techman:
virtual James Garner as an ever-young Jim Rockford? :techman:

    the list is endless...

I would totally dig an all-CGI Trek series if it was written well, but leave the original cast alone. Start with a new ship and crew.

I've been saying it for 10 years.

I don't have a real problem letting JJ finish a trilogy that's an alt-trek just like there are alternate versions of Batman

But I was saying a decade or more ago that when the technology got to the right place, the obvious thing to do was a CGI Trek SERIES (not fucking movies once every three years) which were set in the years between TMP and WoK (that ship and set were much friendlier, IMO, to the look that can be created CGI than the TOS ship)

If the proper voice talent can be found, there's no good reason (from a storytelling point of view) not to do it.

But you have to make the dollars and cents line up.

How coll would it be if you convinced FX or AMC to gamble on such an idea? That way you could get actual kick-ass storytelling in the bargain.

Plenty of ripe periods in the canon history. The Romulan War right after Enterprise. The Cardassian War before TNG. The Dominion War from a perspective outside the big players. The entire era covered by Ent-B and Ent-C. The era following the destruction of Romulas in the "prime" universe.

I have had this same thought for many years. Since I read the books, I have experienced many new TOS eps in my head. Bring it to life I say!!!

The idea of reanimating dead actors with CG and fake voices is far more repulsive than anything anyone could do to Star Trek.

Pine, Qunto, Saldana and Urban are Kirk, Spock, Uhura and McCoy now. And they do a fine job. Let the old actors rest in peace (or enjoy their retirement) and allow the iconic CHARACTERS to remain immortal.

to be fair, i LIKE the new cast fine (with the possible exceptions of Scotty and Chekov) and if that were my only motivation for doing something else, I wouldn't consider it a compelling reason.
