Bizarro world. Nothing makes sense - not character motivations, not the way US government and businesses work, not basic human psychology. It's like all the writers know about how anything works come from watching political pundits having spaz attacks.
Compared to children of earth its really substandard so far. There better be some awesome payoff in the later episodes.
RTD's writing typically leaves a lot to be desired in terms of making sense logically. Many times I'm sitting there thinking, there is no way that would ever happen in the real world, even considering the science fiction setting. But whatever, I watch the show because of Captain Jack and Gwen, not so much for plot logic because it pretty much never has that. I'd like to see the show go back to a more episodic format with maybe a season-long underlying arc though.
Fairly wank to date. Not esp hopeful of improvement. Children of Earth had some balls and was atmospheric. This is a bit wham-bam for my liking.
It surprises me that a world where Children of the Earth happened, would be a world where people would unquestioningly allow things like the "overflow camps" to happen with nary a whisper. How could anyone trust the government...any government again after the truth came out? It's nuts and nonsensical but I admit I'm still watching it and enjoying it despite the constant need to suspend belief.
Torchwood went to shit when they killed Owen and Toshiko and left us with Mary Sue and Jack's boyfriend!!!!
A few more episodes in, and maybe it's getting better . . . or maybe I'm just getting used to crap TV. The Torchwood writers seem to function like this: think of the worst situation you can imagine - - Let's have somebody murder his own grandson! - In front of his daughter! - Evil pharmaceutical company in cahoots with government radically changes everyone's biology for profit! - Americans cheer on a pedophile/child murderer/Jesus figure! - Oooh! Oooh! VIVISECTIONS! . . . and craft some semblance of a plot to get the characters into such situations.
There's a lot of trying to make the details fit the events in Revelation. It is really straining credibility IMO the lack of at least some of the population screaming and yelling and fighting back when knowledge of the ovens came out. People agreeing to it and justifying it all over the place just seems unbelievable.
Geez... what happened with the sudden Trek injection? I'm expecting at least Takei and Koenig next week.
Fucking hell. Just started watching it this week and I'm up to episode seven. I agree that the story doesn't make a whole lot of sense. There's a lot of talent in this series that's being wasted. I also think the gay sex scenes make it almost unwatchable. I really like the character of Jack Harkness and I'm not anti-gay by any means, but as a heterosexual male it's just not my thing. I've used the fast forward and skip buttons quite a bit.
So...would someone who enjoys Dr Who stand a good chance of liking some Torchwood if he were to start watching it from season 1 on Netflix?
Children of Earth is excellent, but I didn't care for the rest of it. Also, Torchwood's target audience is NOT the same as Dr. Who's target audience.
Yup. Torchwood is a pretty cool series. It has the same DNA as Doctor Who but it's definitely different. But I'm not really liking the most recent series (Miracle Day).
Caught the first episode of season 1 at lunch. Kinda seemed like they took Who, cut out the Doctor and the TARDIS, then told everyone they could cuss. Oh, and they can apparently show gruesome, bloody things. Not terrible, as pilots go. And Captain Jack at least has some semi-interesting character development in the bag, so a nod or two to the Who fans. I'll probably keep watching.
Just remember that the second season is better than the first one if you ever feel like giving up. Also, there is some fairly explicit male homosexuality throughout the show, if that bothers you.
Yeah...they started in with that right out of the gate, so it's not like I can claim I was tricked into seeing it. I can fast forward through any graphic ghey buttsecks if the show is otherwise decent. Looks like they'll get down with the girl-on-girl action too, so there may be balance in the force.
OK, so what channel is this originally aired on? That second episode (which cracked me right the fuck up) was pretty damned racy, what with the non-corporeal alien inhabiting people so it could feed off of their orgasm energy. No way you could put that on broadcast TV in the states without heavy censoring.
Well it was originally on BBC Three, then BBC Two, then BBC One, I think. In the States, I think it was shown on BBC America, but I am not sure since I got it from other means. The most recent, "Torchwood: Miracle Day" was on StarzHD in the US.
