The only thing that kind of speed is good for is downloading massive quantities of HD porn. Is that why you have it?
I get 50 up/down and it is fast enough to watch HD from Netflix and Hulu. I can also easily watch multiple HD streams from MLB TV, as well as NHL Gamecenter. I might upgrade to 100 up/down when my contract is up, but I won't really use it that much. Nobody needs 500 up.
My service is through Time Warner. I have 20 Mbps Dn, and I love it. It's more than enough for what I need, and I constantly use the internet, uploading and downloading HD video, watching Netflix in HD, downloading updates, and the like. Now, on the flipside, I have 1 Mbps Up, and it would be nice if that were a bit wider, since I do upload HD video. Still, for the price, I can't really complain!
You're right, I don't need 500mbps up, I need more than that. I think 4gbps would be nice, that way I could stream HD content at 60 fps with 32-bit color depth uncompressed. My unrealistic pipe dreams aside, don't presume to tell me what speeds I need for my internet, because I actually could use 500mbps easily for work.
I think if you can get super fast internet... why the hell not? What possible downsides could there be if you can afford it?
Probably if you're a dumbass with unsecured wireless and your leech of a neighbor goes and pirates everything on teh Interwebz and then the RIAA/MPAA goes after you...
I've not had any problems. But, then we need to pick up our new modem...when we do it will be faster.
