A few months ago I was looking to buy an external hard-drive, or an internal and putting into a case for storage. And the prices were nuts, a 500gb was around $129-139. And I was talking to my brother in law about, and he also mentioned that the prices were crazy (he works as a system admin for Sun Trust) and he was saying that the prices had doubled in just a short time.

Today I'm looking at the prices again, the the prices are back to normal. A 1tb external drive is $70, and a 750gb drive is $60.

Anywho I think I'll be picking one of these up today.

You're overpaying. My new external is 3T for $130.

I saw a 3tb for $130 on the site, I'm looking for something that's rather cheap. And the 1tb is more than what I need now. But I may pick up a 3tb later on.

Here's a slight improvement in your range: $60 after rebate, 1T, USB 3.0. You can find 1T drives in the $50-$60 range, although most are a little more.

Forget the 1TB. Just go straight for the 3TB. That's what I did. Also in the $130 neighborhood.

I tend to agree with this. The space fills up surprisingly quickly.

Just one word of caution. The Windows 7 backup utility and certain standard 3T drive formatting do not, apparently, get along. Keep this in consideration if the plan is to use the external in part to back up an internal drive on such a machine, and be sure to reformat the drive, if necessary, before putting a lot of other stuff on it.

Thanks for that info, I had no idea that was a problem.

And going on that info, I'm also thinking about switching out the hard-drive on the laptop. Does Windows 7 let you image the drive to another one so you can switch them out? Or would I need a separate utility?

I think I paid about $60 for a 2tb external drive like two years ago. Where the hell are you guys shopping?

I've never seen prices quite that good. More like $80 for a 2T if you wait for a good sale/rebate, but usually the best I see is around $90--I looked for a while before settling on the 3T/$130. Price didn't seem to vary much at all across sellers. $60 for a 2T sounds like a used/refurb from an unknown seller, but if not it's just a great deal.

Hard drives were cheap, then the Earthquake and tsunami wiped out a lot of the major manufacturers.

On mine is iTunes stuff. It was taking up over 400 GB on my 500 GB drive and I needed to move it so I could fit other stuff onto the 500 GB one.

I've not bought a CD in almost five years. I do buy DVD/BluRay but only if they come with a digital download. Eventually as I upgrade the computer system and hook it into the TV system I'll be moving away from DVD/BluRay and going all digital. I rarely pop in a DVD/BluRay when I have the digital download and it's on Netflix (TV series).

Fiction Books? Can't remember the last one I bought at a book store. I do know that since I got my Kindle I've not bought one in over two years though in physical form.

Non-Fiction? A handful. Generally survival books, workout books, gun books, self-defense books, some that are not yet digital but I desperately want, some that I want to add to the physical library such as history books and classics (Wizard of Oz, Whit Fang etc etc). The survival books obviously want those in physical form. The other books are too big to be on the Kindle in terms of formatting. And as for classics I like to add them to my physical library. All other non-fiction goes Kindle.

I've even bought a Dilbert book for the Kindle to see what it looked like. It came out okay but I still like to buy those to add to the physical library much like my beloved Calvin & Hobbes collection.

Magazines? Still in physical form. Flirted with Reason and National Review on Kindle. Both okay but I do not like that it seems that almost all magazines for eReaders (including iPad magazines) do not contain all the articles. Also I do not like that most magazines don't include the pictures or graphs. And they all still want to charge almost as much as the physical copy. I think magazines have a long way to go. Also too many magazines have to many problems in formatting that have to be solved. I would love to get rid of all print magazines and have nothing but digital subscriptions that automatically download.

Newspapers? Practically worthless. Even worse then the magazines. Especially in the cost department. If you want a newspaper it's almost always better to buy it in physical form.

Comic books? Graphic novels? Not really into that right now. A iPad or Kindle Fire could change that.

In short I'm willing to move everything to digital. I'm just waiting for the content providers to get on the ball.

A good HD movie file (MKV) runs about 7-10 GB. The 11 Trek films in HD, plus the first 3 series (and TAS) in SD would push the limit of a 500 GB drive.

    And that's just a start.

I have 2 1TB drives for movies & TV, and a 320 GB drive for music. The Music drive is almost full. That's not counting the internal hard drives on my computers or the portable/flash drives.

I'll be looking to a 3TB drive (Costco) to consolidate some of the movies & music, and will be deleting some of the TV that I can easily find streaming (& don't care about keeping around for a while).

I've got about 600GB of games, music, family pictures, and backups. If I were to buy all the shows I've been meaning to buy, I'd easily fill up all 2TB I have.
I haven't wanted to buy those, though, since my external is 3 or 4 years old, and so is my hard drive, and it's showing signs of failure. :garamet:

Are you folks talking about USB-powered external drives? Because the prices you're quoting seem to indicate you're buying ones that require an external power source.

I don't even bother with external drives anymore if they require a secondary power source.

The biggest capacity I've seen to date for USB-powered is 2TB, and I picked up a very portable WD 2TB USB-powered drive for $119 during the Boxing Day sales.

I purchased a USB-powered 2TB with USB 3.0/2.0 compatibility for $119 on Amazon 2 months ago to fill with movies and tv shows to mail to my brother in Afghanistan. It was the largest capacity I could find that didn't require an additional power source. I suppose something could have come out in the last 2 months that is larger than 2TB but I haven't seen it.

I am interested in getting something 6-8TB that can be accessed over my Wifi network for streaming things throughout my house but I've got other priorities that out weigh it right now. And it's easy enough to just move my laptop around anyway, so justifying the purchase to my wife will be much easier when the price drops on those.

The reason for 6-8TB is that I can't image exceeding the capacity for a very long time. The need to download is being replaced by streaming. I've got 1.8TB of videos now, but that collection basically only grows during the runs of a few premium cable shows that I can't buy/rent/stream without subscribing to their stations. With Netflix and Hulu Plus I just don't need to find things from alternative sources the way I did a few years ago. :pirate:

I have about 100 GB of pics I've taken over the last 2 years. When I get a DSLR camera that collection will increase rapidly. So the extra space on the HDD will cover those.

I remember paying $800 for a 20 megabyte drive back in the day.

    I'm getting old. Sigh.
