Any war in Korea would involve however many troops are stationed there right now, today. By the time further reinforcements from the U.S. arrive, it would be over.

    How do you figure that?
I would assume the job of the current troops would be to defend South Korea while an offensive force is brought in.

Are 40,000 troops able to regroup and attack such a large target?

It's quasi-evil. It's the margarine of evil. It's the Diet Coke of evil. Just one calorie, not evil enough.

Our current administration, however, is hard at work on changing that.

As someone said up thread i doubt china would be happy about us troops being on thier doorstep.

It would more likely be the Chinese pointing a missile or 2 north koreas way or stationing a few thousand troops on the border and saying to the NK.

" If you go for it kiddo, we wont support you this time but you can be assured we shall kick your grubby little ass back to the stone age if you try anything stupid"

mind you my military knowledge is pretty limited as it were.

While there would likely be some reinforcements of US troops, my understanding is that any offensive would mainly consist of South Korean forces. They've got the numbers on the ground right now while it would take weeks for significant US reinforcements to arrive.

Exactly my point. Korea is a small peninsula. It would likely be a "lightning war" if we go all-out. It would be over with very quickly.

That said, assuming SK takes a beating, there will be disaster recovery and refugees and security concerns. I guess reinforcements would be involved in that.

It depends on how much of a serious buildup there was to the time the North Koreans launched hostilities.

The Norks might simply try a gambit of provoking the U.S. into sending large scale reinforcements and then deliberately deescalate thus forcing the U.S. to begin an expensive withdrawal of forces AND THEN even claiming they were forcing the U.S. to "retreat".

The war itself isn't the issue - it's the exit strategy. Refugees running north and south - indoctrinated masses unable to function in normal society. Who governs that mess?

It is quite clear that your desire is not merely for the end of tyranny. You like the thought of large-scale conflict for its own sake.

And on top of that, it is not obvious that a war to destroy the North Korean regime would not have all sorts of side effects that would cause immense suffering and death for many, many people.

My preference in North Korea is that the regime be overthrown from within by a more moderate faction. That way the situation can be defused and the lot of the people living there can be improved.

The armistice is between the US and North Korea. A treaty with South Korea does not make a damn. North Korea launches an assault of any kind and we are back in a shooting war. We can use this as a chance to get rid of all the old munitions. Let the b52s loose.

The NK regime can never be overthrown from within because there are no moderates. Any attempt at organizing opposing political ideology would be crushed, and the dissenters sent to concentration camps.

There was an attempted coup barely a month ago. During the 90s a large section of the army attempted to march on Pyongyang. And millions of people are threatened with starvation. The conditions are ripe for an overthrow of the regime.

Why do you think that Kim is sabre-rattling at all? It isn't because it makes his pecker feel big. It's because he needs to, to force people to rally behind him.

Of course, by "moderates" and "dissidents" I don't mean political liberals or anything like that. But it's easy to imagine an army faction taking control that would tolerate an opening up to the outside world and a less belligerent attitude generally. It has after all happened in all other "communist" countries.
