How on earth could I have not noticed this before? Everytime he sits down he steps over the back of the chair to do it.... [YT="clicky"]lVIGhYMwRgs[/YT] Oh and just to make this an RR thread.... Dayton is a very odd chap indeed...
I never noticed it because I never thought it was strange. Frakes is pretty tall and those chairs are quite low. I guess we should start calling this "the Riker Maneuver."
Hmmm.....maybe some kind of "power play" intimidation/domination thing or something. I might start doing it - it looks pretty cool!
those chairs being set pieces, it may well be more awkward for a tall person to sit down in the more usual manner. I find Picard's yank at the tunic sit down maneuver far stranger.
I am laughing my ass off! Never noticed that before. I always noticed his putting a foot up on the console next to Data whenever he was watching what he did. He must like just airing out the boys once in awhile.
Frakes has a weird walk as well. Watch when he walks around corners. He slouches his shoulders at an angle and let's his inside arm hang like a pendulum.
I see it more like Riker sitting down like a boss. Kind of a "fuck you, I'm turning my damned chair around" kind of thing. Also, there's the Star Trek Calgary convention panel where Marina Sirtis and Michael Dorn talk about the Riker Walk. You can watch all of it here, and it's worth every second: [yt="Sirtis, Frakes, Dorn Q&A Panel - Calgary Trek Con 2012"]?v=dceWdTS6wUg[/yt]
It's a tilting walk, like he's a few steps from falling down. Or that he's overestimating his actual height, ducking around corridors for fear of beaning every doorway.
I always noticed the way he walks up the ramps on the sides of the bridge. He leans forward in an odd way. People always made fun of the way I walked when I was a little kid. As I got older, I sort of learned to walk in a more normal manner, but it has always been odd. It wasn't until my second knee operation that the surgeon told me my knees are deformed (genetic; they've been like that from birth--or even before, I suppose) and that the reason I walk the way I do is because I was just naturally trying to keep them from hurting. I wonder how his knees are?
