GOVT OBTAINS WIDE AP PHONE RECORDS IN PROBE

    http://bigstory.ap.org/article/govt-obtains-wide-ap-phone-records-probe

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department secretly obtained two months of telephone records of reporters and editors for The Associated Press in what the news cooperative's top executive called a "massive and unprecedented intrusion" into how news organizations gather the news.

The records obtained by the Justice Department listed outgoing calls for the work and personal phone numbers of individual reporters, general AP office numbers in New York, Washington and Hartford, Conn., and the main number for AP reporters in the House of Representatives press gallery, according to attorneys for the AP. It was not clear if the records also included incoming calls or the duration of calls.

In all, the government seized the records for more than 20 separate telephone lines assigned to AP and its journalists in April and May of 2012. The exact number of journalists who used the phone lines during that period is unknown but more than 100 journalists work in the offices where phone records were targeted, on a wide array of stories about government and other matters.

    More at the link.......

Could this be what breaks the media out of it's ass kissing mode of this man and start them going after him and his corruption?

    Not quite the same.

People by and large like Obama (or at least the idea of Obama).

No one hardly even the Republicans ever liked Nixon.

Such as the bit about the records being legally subpoenaed as part of a criminal investigation. Sorry, doesn't sound like Nixon.

No, the usual sheep will play it off as being necessary for some reason or other, and that since these people had nothing to hide, they had nothing to worry about. :diacanu:

Or "Reporters" to "Tea Party Groups" for that matter, if the liberal indifference regarding the IRS incident is any indication.

Why? A routine law enforcement activity took place under proper procedure and followed due process. The AP is pissed because they got caught releasing classified information. How many outraged over this are crying for Private Manning?

Yeah, nope, still doesn't say what you want it to say. It might be distasteful to you and the AP, but nothing in that article says the Justice Department acted illegally or unethically.

You do understand that the crime committed was NOT by the AP--who co-operated until the Administration said the national security concerns no longer stood--but the person who LEAKED the information to begin with?

Yeah, but do you understand that the records were subpoenaed as part of a criminal investigation? Do you understand that's a perfectly normal investigative technique?

Honestly, no. And I question whether the Bush administration would have subpoenaed anyone during an investigation into national security leaks, since their administration sometimes relied on those leaks to sabotage political opponents. Why open themselves up to subpoenas?

The same reason why they chose to open themselves up to speculation about their Super-Secret Halliburton Hurricane Steering System by using it to ruin a few black communities.

    Because it's a retarded premise.

If true that's a real problem.

The Executive branch listening in on calls between Representatives/Senators and reporters would be a serious breach of separation of powers.

Nixon was reelected with the biggest landslide in history up to that point. The political insiders might not of liked him, but the people did.

Yeah. People forget Nixon was popular with people when he was reelected. It's only after Watergate and all that came out after that that people turned against him.

Shit, Nixon's crime? Without his knowledge some staffers broke into the opposition's headquarters so he covered it up.

Obama's crime? Take your pick: Helping run guns to Mexican drug lords to destabilize the Mexican government and the US border, undermining the Constitution (that he has twice sworn to protect), using the IRS to hurt your Enemies (and aid in your election), failing to protect a US Embassy from a terrorist attack (and then covering it up with a fake story to help with a close reelection), tapping press phone lines, funneling tax dollars into your cronies pockets through their failed businesses...and that's just the things that come to mind off the top of my head.

    Here we go. :dayton:

I don't want to dismiss or even minimize this, because there is a lot that concerns me here, but to equate Obama with Nixon on this is a false equivelency at best and cognitive dissonance at worst. A president was impeached and 40 people went to jail over Watergate. The shit hit the fan when someone reported a burgular.

Here, the DOJ felt they were acting on matters of national security and it they themselves that disclosed to the AP.

I'm sure that this will be trumped up a great deal by Obama's political opponents, and special investigators will be commissioned, but let's see where this goes before we declare Obama = Nixon.

Balderdash. You guys are just ignorant as fuck, all the time.

    What were Nixon's crimes?

Attempting to subvert the US presidential election.
Criminal conspiracy to cover up the subversion.
The Huston Plan - one of the first of his "enemies" plans, which illegally gained information, including wiretapping, on anti-war protesters
Extortion attempts of LBJ over what Nixon learned in Executive Office briefings about the actions of the previous president
The successful sabotage of the Paris Peace accords which lead to 5 more years of bloodshed in Vietnam
Another burglary committed with his knowledge on the psychiatrist of Daniel Ellsberg, the journalist that wrote the Pentagon papers
The ordering of 17 phone taps on journalists and White House officials without court approval
The entire "Plumbers" apparatus - a personal criminal squad answerable to Nixon that was involved in dozens of burglaries over the years
Paying the chauffeur of one of Nixon's foremost political opponents in the Democrats to photograph materials useful to the Nixon campaign
Inserting a retired Secret Service agent in to Ted Kennedy's protective detail to spy on the Senator
Using the IRS to go after democratic candidates and fund raisers
He ordered a burglary on the Brookings Institution, including safe cracking

Watergate wasn't a lone action. It was the culmination of a legacy of criminality being run from the White House.

My god, you're retarded. What is it like, living in your tiny, tiny brain? Nixon was never impeached. The two Presidents who were impeached were...drumroll...Johnson and...wait for it...Clinton.

There are no less than...a half dozen significant scandals that the Obama Administration is up to its eyeballs in. Versus an ex post facto penny ante burglary that accomplished nothing. There is no comparison between Nixon and Obama. Nixon was a competent, qualified President.

Don't get me wrong though. I don't want Obama impeached. You fuckers all reelected him. Let us all live with that idiotic decision. I thought it was stupid to recall Gray Davis to install an Austrian bodybuilder in California. Anyone with 2 brain cells knew Gray Davis was an idiot when he was reelected--yet he WAS reelected. Let Idiot California live with him for 4 more years. He won fair and square. That liberals are too fucking stupid to understand basic facts without John Stewart telling them what to think is not my problem.

Well, it is. But I'm resigned to it.

Literally the only reason Nixon wasn't actually impeached and removed from office is that he quit before it could happen.

But hey, you know, Clinton Benghazi Fast and Furious Muslim.
