Hand the best carpenter in the entire world two soggy soda crackers and a dead fish and order him to build a woodshed, well, he's not going to look too great either.
I'm listening to the interviews now at the courthouse. Martin's main lawyer actually is a pretty funny dude. Everyone in this trial (even the prosecution) did everything as well as they could under the circumstances. The state was handed a hot potato.
At the end of the day the "stand your ground" law is legislation in Florida. Seems to me that for as long as that law remains on the statute books this is the legally correct outcome. With the greatest prosecution in the world, if there is no legal structure to permit a successful prosecution then the case is doomed to failure anyway. *shrug*
Should have never gone to trial. The only reason it went to trial was some prosecutor trying to get famous.
El Chup called it - you have to live with the laws that are in place. Thanks social justice crusaders for not understanding this and trying to push an agenda in an inappropriate format.
A kid is dead, and a man's life, even though found not guilty, will be ruined. No one really won in this. I guess on the plus side, some lawyers made money. Notice the smiles in the interviews.
For the umpteenth time... STAND YOUR GROUND did NOT apply in this case. Stand Your Ground says you have no duty to retreat when confronted with a threat. Zimmerman has claimed from DAY ONE that Martin attacked him. Retreating was NEVER an option for Zimmerman.
Do people really understand what the "Stand your ground" clause in the Self Defense Law really means? It has nothing to do with guns or weapons of any sort. Prior to this clause being added, a person could not use force to defend themselves from an attack unless they tried to retreat (flee) and failed first. I think most rational people can agree that, that is insane. Most (all?) States already allowed that in your home. You had no duty to attempt to retreat from attack before you could use force to defend yourself or others. This clause was added to rectify a few errors. For instance, your place of business was not exempted. If someone attacked you in your office, you were required to attempt to retreat before you could lawfully use force to defend yourself from their attack. So, rather than get into a bunch of nail biting and specifics, the legislatures did the wise, I think, thing and simply said that you no longer have to retreat before you can use force if you're in a place you're legally authorized to be in.
Zimmerman no doubt will be looking forward to the conclusion of a lawsuit or two against the news folks who doctored the 911 calls before putting them over the air.
We might have "stand your ground" here in Georgia too, because I've never heard of anyone getting charged for shooting someone versus retreating to safety. If someone's a threat, they're a threat so defend yourself - why risk them getting the upper hand?
If they are found guilty of this, then I hope he successfully sues them. Still, he's going to be remembered, nationally, as the guy who shot an innocent kid. Whether he did or not, that kind of thing tends to stick. That is Bianca Freire.
In all fairness, I've seen a lot of that lately. CNN has blatantly gotten some of the "facts" wrong tonight. They have even directly contradicted what they reported just a few days ago. I've also lost a lot of respect for the Birmingham ABC affiliate tonight. They posted a picture to their webpage, facebook, and twitter. It was a picture of a very, very young and innocent looking Trayvon next to current picture of Zimmerman with a stern look on his face with a big red "NOT GUILTY" written under it in the stereotypical stencil "prison" font.
Well...yeah. Whether he was guilty or not, his life is over for all practical purposes, and he's pretty much gonna have to move to Idaho, or some other state where there the number of minorities can be counted on one hand.
I would like to put something in here you may not realize..... The first group of authorities didn't charge him because there was no evidence to support a case. That first group of "authorities" was attacked and thrown to the side. The original state attorney was replaced with Angela Corey and her minions (the guys who represented the state in court). The detective, Serino, who wouldn't play along was demoted from detective to night patrolman and is on the streets in uniform writing traffic tickets. The Sheriff who had only been on the job for a few months was fired. That group of "authorities" knew that there was no case. They knew that they had nothing to go against Zimmerman's statement. They knew this wouldn't survive in a court case. But because of racial politics that first group of authorities was tossed out in favor of a new group which proceeded to charge Zimmerman. They knew this case sucked so bad that they skipped the Grand Jury out of fear that he wouldn't even be indicted. They pursued a case that should never have been brought to trial. And they sure as hell should have never tried for 2nd Degree Murder. They were doing drugs to come up with that nonsense.....
This case has nothing to do with Stand Your Ground. People here in America bring it up are usually also the people who are anti-gun and they believe getting rid of Stand Your Ground is one line of attack against guns. They are wrong of course since Stand Your Ground doesn't require a gun. It just says you the person do not have to retreat in the face of an attack from another person. That's all Stand Your Ground is. Someone attacks you, you have the right to defend yourself without having to attempt to retreat first. Even if there was no such thing as Stand Your Ground on the books and we had the old Florida law where you were required to attempt to retreat before using force this case would still have the same outcome because Martin prevented Zimmerman from retreating by being on top of him during the fight. This case was straight up self defense.
The case against Zimmerman having been shown to be a complete sham, the character assassination of him continues apace.
I suspect he'll have a highly lucrative second life as a poster boy for various pro-gun, pro-self defense organizations. He writes a book, he gives some speeches, he becomes a "contributor" at FOX, he'll be just fine.
The Nazis would be conflicted..... We like you but we hate you at the same time...... not sure what to do.......
