I didn't see anything sexy or seductive taking place on that stage, unless you think an emaciated dollar whore wearing a derp rictus while imitating a dog wiping its ass on a carpet is sexy.

So I found the clip after sorting through a hundred over commentary videos...and that was it? That barely even passes for twerking and as for the outfit, if Lady Gaga wore that, no one would bat an eye. Anyone that still had the image of Cyrus as the wholesome Hannah Montana before this has clearly been living under a rock for the past five years. :jayzus:

two reactions i saw I thought were interesting-

One is a mash-up video that has the Miley from "Hannah Montana" reacting to the Miley on stage the other night.

The other was a thoughtful column asking why no one was criticizing Robin Thicke for letting a girl half his age grind on him on stage when he's a married father himself.

Well yeah, my complaint has been all along that it was a train wreck not because it was slutty but because it was such a poor effort at being slutty. GaGa does do goofy shit but goofy is her trademark, it's all she's ever done. Miley looks like she just stole a page from Gaga's book to try to reinvent herself and just doesn't know how to do it well.

Here's the video I mentioned above:

I probably never saw a full episode. But I, Carley was often fun.

I certainly wouldn't have any problem praising it (Montana) if i'd been a fan.

I think the real issue is the whole thing sucked.

It was performed badly and partially out of tune, she was dressed like pedobear before she ripped it off to strut around in very ill fitting latex. The hair and makeup were as far from flattering as you can get and the racist overtones in the beginning sucked too.

Plus the song is misogynistic crap.

MTV is circling the drain. The only time it is remotely useful is like 3-6 AM when they actually play music videos.

I remember, back in 1981, when I heard they were going to launch a cable station that showed nothing but music videos. I thought it would never last. Turns out I was right after all. It just took a lot longer than I thought it would. :bergman:

Honestly , even if MTV didn't floor the gas to jump the shark in the early 2000s, the Internet would have made them obsolete anyway. You can catch almost every video out there on the Vevo channel on YT.

That being said, why can't they have at least one show that was of the caliber of "Beavis and Butthead" instead of whore parade line-up that includes a THIRD Teen Mom series (wonder how many of them will neglect their babies when the fame hits them? :garamet:), The Real World and Snooki and JWOWW tramping it up? :jayzus:

There's a lot of solid points there but i seriously doubt pirating killed the profitability of videos.

As for MTV's programing, I don't really give fuck if they play music videos or not, I just think that given what they DO play they should change the official name from:

    Music TV to Moron TV

I can think of any number of women (Katy Perry, for example) who could have done the same routine and people would have applauded. it's not how "shocking" it was...it's how badly she did it.

Sad to think "Beavis and Butthead" set the bar too high.

From what I saw, that performance had to have been something Cyrus put together herself because I can't see a real professional coming up with something like that.

To me, Miley Cyrus is FAR from the most attractive 20 year old around.

Yet, the hottest 20 year old that has ever lived could not have made that "act" look seductive and appealing.

Ironically, I think the only people who would've liked it would be the audience of 14 year old boys that Cyrus is apparently desperate to leave behind.

MTV was devoting less and less of programming airtime to music videos before piracy was a "thing." Shortly after they started, they decided that wanted to air more than just videos, and began casting around for ideas. Had the original "Real World" not been such a hit, they might still be looking, but people watched that shit, and it was cheap to produce, so MTV began cranking out crap like that by the bucket load, and the rest is infamy.

Their short promos were pretty funny - I love the Toby Huss Sinatra bits.

To be fair, the first few seasons of the Real World were about more than just making out in hot tubs. I remember catching an episode when I was really young about a 20 year old woman that finds out she is pregnant and decides to get an abortion. Her mother went along with her for support and mentioned that she too had been a single teenage mom and happen to give birth the year before Roe Vs. Wade. That same season also dealt with a few of the cast being gay before many people outside of SoHo and the Castro district of San Francisco were open about it.

Then, it kind of devolved into the rubbish bin that it is today. But once upon a time it actually did discuss the real world.

I watched the video and I think Miley might make a decent lesbian or give a good rimjob, but other than that, she was gross and unattractive.

I think she was trying to act sexy, and badly failing. Sexy is good, farce is good, trying to he sexy but inadvertently generating farce? Not good.

One more thought on Miley, then a bit on MTV. In a strip joint, she would not get the job of giving me a lapdance, not after seeing her "skills."

As for MTV, they started with "Video Killed the Radio Star," and then this:

I blame MTV as one of the things that killed rock music.

Music is about what you're hearing. With the music video, it suddenly became about what you were seeing. The great rockers were a scruffy bunch and the music industry suddenly became more interested in the visual part rather than the music.

Combine that with a lazy recording industry and a dumbed down generation of kids that don't understand music and lack the vocabulary to write lyrics, and it's a recipe for disaster.

You may have seen this meme floating around the web or on FB. It's actually gotten so big that when searching for it for this post, I found a translation for this thing in what appeared to be Russian.

I remember one person complaining when American Idol allowed singers to bring their own instruments to play as they sang, because she thought it took away from the performance. The sad part is this woman was at least forty--old enough to remember when this was the norm, not the exception.:jayzus:
