The treats are made in China (surprise!), and there's been nearly 600 dogs that have died from the treats, plus thousands more dogs sickened by them.
Dog food is still food of a sort. Nothing food or food like from China should be bought. Not even the Chinese trust the food sold in their stores because so much of it is adulterated or just out right fraud.
I've been occasionally tempted to buy farm raised fish from China due to unbelievably low prices (like Salmon filets for just $1) but then I read stuff like the link below and realize it's not safe, they drench it in all manner of chemicals which the FDA has specifically banned, they raise it in sewage water tainted with industrial run off, plus out right lying is the rule rather than the exception. For example virtually all fish from China labeled "wild caught" actually is farm raised and they deliberately mislabel it and often the fish isn't even the type of fish the label claims it to be. For example Talapia dyed pink and then labeled as salmon. The FDA has repeatedly had to halt all fish exports from China due to near universal fraud and because the fish is unfit for human consumption. http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Healthday/story?id=4507743
Chinese "gutter oil" is made from fatty deposits scouped out of city sewer systems and then processed and resold as cooking oil. At least 10% of all the cooking oil sold in China is made from reclaimed sewer waste. Like I said, NEVER buy any food product which came from China. Ever.
I buy about 150 containers of food out of China every year and my company does over a thousand more. In my 10 years I haven't had any serious issues. You just have to find the right suppliers. China gets a bad rap but India, Mexico and even Canada have just as much product rejected by the FDA every year.
So fucking scary. These are not the cheap ass treats either. Milo's kitchen treats are expensive! So glad I make all my doggie's food myself now.
Until our leaders grow a pair and start forcing fines or penalties on China's misdeeds this is going to continue to happen.
So what? Half an hour after getting poisoned, your dog comes to life and wants another treat! Everybody wins!
