Beavis_Butthead_V3_Headlice.jpg So my daughter came home yesterday from preschool with a note that says she has been exposed to head lice. Fine. Shit happens in school.

But here's the thing that lit a fire under my ass.

The school district doesn't do anything. I pulled up the handbook and it says the child can still come to school. Their number one priority is not to make the infected child feel excluded (because they have small bugs laying eggs on their head)

If a kid has a fever they can't come back to school until they are two days fever free. But bringing lice into my life, we don't want the child to feel sad.

Sure, the child can still come to school since lice is not life threatening, like an illnesses can be. If you as a parent want to be on the safe side, you might keep the kid home a day or two after finding out, but once you use the shampoo there really isn't much else you can do. I don't know whether what you stated really is their number one priority or not, it could be. If anything, they might be trying to make sure the source isn't "shamed" for an incident they have almost no control over. Kids usually already feel bad enough they have lice, no reason to point and laugh.

What else should the school do besides make the parents aware of the situation? Mandatory delousing? I couldn't imagine that going over to well. Of course the lice need to be exterminated, but that should be left up to the parents.

What would be your ideal solution that the school should implement?

Put a flea collar on the kid, or make them wear plastic head cover.

Obvious new parent. Hey dude....next will be ringworm. Common stuff that can happen. And lice is easily removed. Better clean up her bed too.

IIRC, having lice used to be a huge stigma at many schools since it marked a person and their family as "poor" and "unclean".

When I was 10 I played little league baseball, we all shared the same 2 helmets (One big and one little) the whole team ended up with head lice, Just used some shampoo, washed the bedding, problem solved. It's a pain, but it's part of life.

I know. That's why I said oh well shit happens. The problem is when my wife took our daughter to school today one of the girls with lice was there with her mom (because her mom told everyone it was her daughter) and then she told my wife that she couldn't afford the twenty dollar shampoo called Rid so her neighbor had given her daughter some African oil to treat her.

The preschool my daughter went to was 400 dollars a month with a 700 dollar registration fee.
Of course that was a local church school.
Fortunately, I got a bunch back on my taxes.

when I was teaching, we were supposed to do a DAILY (thank god not actually enforced) lice check in home room.

Honestly, I always kind of say it as a charade to pander to the people who used it as a marker to look down on the poor people.

I never understood why people were always busted up about it - bugs happen, deal with it. I'm not sure the little fuckers even hurt anything beyond feelings.

I was against her going there. But my wife brother and his wife really wanted her to attend that school so they paid the registration fee and signed her up.

I kind of did not like being roped into paying 400 a month but given they had already paid the fee, I felt there wasn't much I could do to refuse.

I actually agree with Ben Maxwell.

If the kid is sick, has an infection or parasite... they should not be allowed on school grounds. Period. And it should be the parents' fucking problem to figure out what to do with the kid.

I think parents who knowingly drop sick children off at school should be fined, or preferably flogged in public.

Same thing goes with people who go to work or ride public transit when they're sick. Fuck the fuck off with that fuckery! :ua:

One of these days some little minger is going to bring Captain Tripps to school and then it's all over for humanity.

Depends on the lice population whether they are immune to the shampoo or not. You can pick them out and you are supposed to pick out all the eggs.

We have been through the lice infestation from hell. All three kids have gotten them over and over starting back in the Spring, along with everybody in their classes. These are some kind of super lice. We comb and pick them out, we wash, we spray, we disinfect, they come back. I've never seen anything like it, which is pretty much what all the other parents have been saying. I think (knock wood) we are finally free of it, but it was a good 5 or 6 months of the shit. Just how it goes with kids.

When an outbreak hits, most kids in the class are infected. Basically, this stance would require the school to close every time a kid is discovered with head lice.
