If you need proof that the US hides the capabilities of its military hardware, you need only to look at the history of the F-117, which officially didn't exist until almost 20 years after the first flight. This is despite the fact that more than one of the planes had crashed in civilian areas. Then go find the 60 Minutes interview with former pilots of the SR-71 and listen to them explain that the top speed of the plane is "classified."
