That anyone who says "They just need to work harder and pull themselves up by their bootstraps" is an ignoramus?
What I can't figure out, is why the hell the guy on the left would allow pictures, or ever be seen in public. Dude has no shame.
Well I have serious questions about the universal police training exercise where 5 white targets and one black target pop up and the goal is to is to have the fastest time shooting the black one.
Oh, spare us the faux outrage. If you have a chronic illness, your life is more difficult than if you don't because your body does various things that make life harder. If you're anything other than a straight white male, then all other things being equal, your life is going to end up more difficult because of various ways in which other people -- not all other people, maybe not even a majority, but definitely some people, and often in positions of power -- respond to you. Or as John Scalzi put it, if life were a video game, being a straight white male would be the lowest difficulty setting: It's not that straight white men can't have problems, nor is it that others can't succeed. It's just that being a member of an advantaged group tends to give you some extra "points" in a lot of situations. You want data? Try this study of young people in Baltimore, many of them low-income, both black and white. Even with similar economic backgrounds and levels of educational attainment, white people -- and white men in particular -- had better luck landing jobs. Or try this guy named José who dropped one letter from his name, started sending out resumes as "Joe" instead, and magically started getting more responses. You can tie yourself up in knots trying to deny it, and I'm sure it's inconvenient for whatever weird John Galtian fantasies you may have, but it's there, and there's abundant evidence to prove it.
Honestly, I think that was part of the reason I got interviews in the town I grew up in. Christina is a pretty typical white girl name and drew less attention than Tiana or Keisha would have. Outside of Target that ran applications through the HR Machine, most times I was one of a handful of blacks at the places I worked at.
I do think it's fair to ask why we should generalize about a non-white person in regard to his economic and social strife, but not his propensity toward violent crime. Sent from my iPhone while driving
Usually when someone makes a statement like that it's a preamble to a rant about having to be polite or socially courteous or dignified and refined in some fashion. You know, basic human qualities that once were admired if not expected behavior. Essentially, the original poster is demanding his right to be an unrepentant asshole. For my part, I thank such people for gleefully announcing themselves that way and saving me the trouble of having to find out for myself.
My handle used to be Anna Yolei, which was my penname for fanfiction. So if Face wants to track down some of my old Janeway/Neelix smut, feel free.
Dude.... I understand what you're trying to do here and that you mean well, but no one who is non-white and seriously concerned about race issues in this country wants you to feel sorry for them or wants you to be ashamed of your own skin color. We just want to live together and be treated as equals.
Isn't this where one of 'em makes the little speech about how "All they gotta do is pull up their pants and stop talking that there Ebonics"? Rightforge is slipping...
In case you couldn't tell, that was sarcasm. I never wrote Janeway/Neelix fic. I wrote Enterprise smut with Archer/T'pol, which was worse.
You, and Commie, and all her sad, sad, friends. Ever see any of that hurt/heal one where T'Pol gets raped by some xenophobes and they cut the points of her ears off? I forget which of them wrote that, but I remember that it was one of our TBBS friends. Ah, memories.
Holy fuck, I never came across that one, thank God. I mostly wrote fic for lulz, with a scant few attempts at srs bzns later. And don't lump me in with the Enterprise shipper equivalent of Dayton Kitchens. She and the other harpies helped to shit up the board and I told her off every chance I got. Hell, the very first post I made on WF was about all that nonsense after the finale.
Never met him as far as I know. Actually the author of that story was one of the female Archer/T'Pol fans and it was posted on one of their fanfic sites that someone had linked to. Speaking of Ted, it's kind of funny for me because there's someone my friends and I know IRL who's named Ted and who sounds a lot like the Ted you guys are describing. It helps to add an extra layer of creepy to him.
Can't be him. Ted Wolf had no real life friends, only his rape fantasies to keep him company at night.
Yeah, he wasn't someone we really considered a friend. He was basically someone who hung out around us. His last name wasn't Wolf, though, so it's definitely not the same guy. I still find the thought amusing, though. Aside from a propensity to yell embarrassing things in public, he also had some other weird personality quirks. For instance, since he knows a bunch of us are anime fans, he shared a gross picture on one of our facebook pages and apparently thought it would actually appeal to him. It was of naked anime women being beheaded in a slaughterhouse. Yeah, we kind of distanced ourselves from him after that.
