I've got about nine weeks until I leave Korea, and the sad truth is I've been living high on the hog and I'm up about ten pounds from where I started here, although I could stand to lose twenty. The hardest part about achieving fitness goals is the motivation, so let's help each other out. I did this sort of thing with three friends, and the competitiveness was great. We each put in $100 and after a few months, the winner took the pot. We'll be using the honor system. Each week by Sunday 10pm ET, check in with your numbers. This coming Sunday, October 25, and the last Sunday, December 20, will be the ones that matter. (I chose Dec 20 to finish, so we can all pig out and enjoy Christmas.) Copy this template to check in: So, for example (let's say this is Nov 22): *calculated as [ (230 - 212) / 230 ] The winner will be determined by the greatest percentage lost by Dec 20, not absolute pounds lost. Everyone starts at a different place, and in truth is easier for an obese person to lose 20 pounds than a person who's only slightly overweight. So, if you want to participate, simply post your first set of numbers by this coming Sunday.
Meh. You should've hit me up in January/February. I've lost six inches on my waist (no telling how many pounds) since then.
I might consider it, however......only if it's fat lost along with the actual weight lost. In other words if I lose 20 pounds but it's all "water weight" and muscle mass, I'm worse off, not better off. So I would only be in this if body fat percentage drops along with the weight. In other words, if X member drops the biggest percentage of their total starting weight, but their body fat percentage doesn't drop, X member doesn't win. For males, measuring body fat is easy - measure the neck, measure the waist. It was one of my many jobs in the army.
Six inches would be about 60 pounds, for most adult males. General rule of thumb is 10 pounds per inch of waist measurement.
I thought about that. I did it that way before, but I'd prefer to keep it simple. Do you know of a good online calculator we could use?
http://www.calculator.net/army-body-fat-calculator.html BTW I think shooter ate "wish sandwiches" and the occasional "ricochet biscuit."
I honestly don't think it was that much. Probably more like 40lbs or so. I went pretty strict on eating lots of protein and avoiding carbs and sugar. I cheat frequently but the pants I'm wearing today are six inches smaller in the waist than the ones I was wearing last winter. And I need a belt to keep these on.
I've lost some weight recently. Not sure how much, but my waist is about 1 to 1-1/2 inches smaller, maybe 2.
If you've been exercising, as opposed to just dieting, you've probably gained muscle - and muscle weighs more than fat. As for this competition ... a lady never gives her weight. ... or is that age? But, then, I'm no lady. So ... I've got till Sunday to decide. Maybe.
One thing about weight though - it can go up & down a few pounds from one day to the next. Sweatlout some water weight, take an epic dump, eat a big meal, female water retention, etc. etc. - there are so many factors at play. I do know cheap bathroom scales are not very accurate. The best kind are the upright type in gyms with the bar you slide. The type fighters get weighed on for weight categories. Those are about as official as they get & foolproof.
Right, but other than my normal work activities, I haven't exercised at all because I loathe it. I hate working out with the fire of a thousand suns, so I don't do it. I've really lost the weight through diet alone.
Many people do just that - and it can be very effective. There's a saying: you get thin in the kitchen, you get fit in the gym. Another saying: you can't out-exercise a bad poor diet. Being military I had to stay fit, but I was always right on the edge of being over body fat percentage for The Army. Guaranteed I would have been booted out of the Air Force - their standards are holy-shit strict! But the point is I could have ate less and been thinner, but if I didn't train as hard, my PT score would go down. Weight and fitness are not always related, not by a long shot. Matter-of-fact new scientific research is showing that those 10 mile a day running lightweight types are actually breaking their bodies down! Turns out humans didn't evolve to run themselves ragged. Apparently sprinting away from a wild animal is more effective than wearing them down via your endurance. Here in the US one of the fittest (body composition, heart rate, blood pressure, strength, etc) groups are the Amish! They work steady all day doing farm work and other outdoor activities. And I'm guessing they don't eat fast food and drink soda every day either.
Damn men. You guys can get away with that - because you have more muscle mass - on a general level - most men have more muscle mass than most women. Women, can't just diet. Our bodies are made to store fat - especially between the ages of 15/20 to 45/50 or as some people refer to (and I'm cringing as I type this) "childbearing years". And, once the women are past that, then our muscles break down even faster. I have to work nearly twice as hard to keep the same muscle tone I currently have. If I want to build more muscle, I have to work out like a muscle-builder.
I've been fluctuating a bit as of late. I got back up to 160lbs earlier in the year, lost about 20. Now I'm back up around 151lbs. I've only been able to keep this much off because I'm just not hungry when I don't go to the gym. :/
Been on a bit of an upward trajectory the last couple years. Back in HS when I was wrestling I was 145. After college when I joined the Army I was 155-165. When I was in my best shape (was maxing out situps, pushups and pullups [airborne ] on the Army PT test) doing power lifting and crossfit I was 185-190. I was a fucking hoss then. Never got bulky, still looked normal. But combined with my wrestling background I was a damn beast when it came to ground fighting. That was 08-11. Once I knew I was heading out, on my last deployment I kinda let myself go. On a good week I ran or worked out twice. Most only one. Some none. Left at 195 with a bit of belly. That was 12. Now I'm about 220 with a bit more of one. I mean it's not huge. I can still see my dick and all, but it sticks out a good couple inches past my chest. :/ One day I'll get back into shape again. Not sure if now is the time.
Ah, fuck it. The waterchickens managed to win a game tonight, I'm a bit drunk but will be flying first class home tomorrow (only $100 upgrade!!! With the lack of baggage fees I only got to drink 7 beverages between here and Houston and then I start MAKING MONEY!). FUCK YEAH!!! And because this was apparently the last file I saved to my phone and seriously, even sober I couldn't make this up, it is the perfect picture to put in this group: Silence of the Kitties
So Rob, anyone actually participating? Personally I think the idea of a competition is a bit much. But it's good to ask a friend who wants to lose weight to do this - I'm actually doing that with a female friend; we text eachother our weight every monday. That's all - no judgement or anything, just the knowledge that come monday morning, you have to tell someone else if you gained or lost weight, and exactly how much. Turns out that is enough to help you lose weight I want to lose 6-8kg before I run my marathon next april; but the sooner the better, as I have a lot of races planned, and losing weight makes you noticeably faster.
Im trying to put weight on Been 9 stone (uhhhh 130lbs ish) since I was 14, now up to nearly 10! Indoor climbing as a hobby helps
Fuck it, I'm in! I cannot let you youngsters show me up. Tell me how to lay down my money. So if everyone lays down let's say 100 dollars and three folks enter, the winner gets the pot of 300 dollars? Yes I will risk 100 for a situation where (not unlike Special Olympics) everyone is a winner. Yes, IMO no matter who gets the money, we all win. So for the record, I'm in. Percentage of weight, percentage of body fat, whatever - I can deal with it. I need a challenge to fire me up.
This is the wrong time of year for this kind of competition. You've got holidays coming up. and the onset of winter always makes me lazy. By spring I'm ready to get out there and pump it up. Or .. at least .. you know ... walk casually.
Sorry I cannot relate. Fall and winter PUMP ME UP! I hate the hot ass Georgia heat. So November - March I come ALIVE! It was 80 degrees today. Anywho, let's lay out the details if anyone is interested. My goal is to get super-fit by my 54th birthday in March. I am old, so it takes a while. That said, two months or so to the December 20 deadline would get me on track at least.
If I had seen it... I've been trying to loose weight since this summer. It took awhile to get started a couple of months really, but once it got started I lost a pound to a couple pounds a week for awhile. I went from 160 to 146 yesterday. I always weigh in the morning. Funny thing there is, I lost pounds since the weekend before thanksgiving even though I stopped "dieting" and exercising from then till now. I don't really diet, I just cut down my portions and add MUFA's to most meals. Part of my problem in getting the weight loss rolling was remembering my lunches on the days that I teach. If I ate the school meals even twice a week losing was a no go. Even when I cut my portions down.
Yeah, I find that bringing my lunch to work is the single most effective thing I can do for weight loss.
Since February, most days my lunch is usually a Clif bar or a package of jerky. Both are about 250 calories. I eat Clif bars more than anything else because they're $0.88 each.
Good point! If you only eat "what you brought" you can't go over the limits of what you brought. If you go out to eat at lunch you might eat way more than what you need to.
