I think I've owned about five or six during my lifetime. I hate changing Bibles once I have lots of notes, underlined, highlighted passages and so forth. I've got some special notes in the one I use now regarding sermons and lessons more than a decade ago.
Depends what you call a Bible. I have the full King James plus apocrypha, the Koran and the Torah. I don't have the Hadith. I'm thinking of getting the Avesta.
Interesting question! Let's see. In the order I got them: Kids' Bible. Unified Catholic. Nestle Greek (just NT, obv). Luther translation. Then Book of Mormon, apocrypha, and the little book from the Jehovah's Witnesses, whatever it was called. Still have all of them. Of course, nowadays I usually read it online.
I have a King James and a Revised Standard. At one time, I had another one handed out by Jesus freaks in my high school parking lot. All I can remember about that one is a cheap plastic, orange cover. No recollection of version, it may have been NT only. I do not have any official scripture from other religions, but I do have quite a few writings on Budhism and Islam. I have read much of the Koran, but do not own a copy.
Good News Bible when i was a child. NIV, King James and they dished out a Giddeons NT at the start of High School. Still got them all.
Illustrated children's bible that I've had my whole life. A KJV bible I was given about 40 years ago. I haven't opened it in about 38 years. I lost count of the number of New Testaments I've been given by well-meaning Army chaplains. I tossed them all in the trash.
The "good news" bible? OMFG if this was the Red Room. But it's not, so I will refrain from further comment.
I had one of those for about 30 seconds, they were tossed into the car I was in with a couple other guys. We turned around and pelted the guys giving them out with them. This was also by Jesus freaks at my high school parking lot. As for owning one... I have one that was sitting on my doorstep when I came home one day. It's somewhere in the house. I think.
The first Bible I owned was a required purchase for the Catholic grade school I went to. It mysteriously got set on fire soon after I finished school there. I currently own a standard KJ Bible as well as a Bible Atlas. I own English translations of the Koran, the Dhammapada, the Bardo Thodol, the Bhagavad Gita, the Ramayana, and the Zend Avesta. I also have various books on mythology... Greco-Roman, Norse, Celtic, Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Indian, Persian, Native American, Chinese, etc.
The Gideon bibles are named after the Jesus freaks that started the Gideons. They were 2-3 guys that stayed in a room at a hotel, after praying together they decided to start their own Jesus freaks group. Then later they thought they should bibles in hotel rooms. So the Gideon bibles are named after them. They also think no one has ever stolen one of their bibles. Maybe Jesus told them that.
The only bible I ever "owned" (plenty that were on the family's bookshelf and just picked one on the way to church) is one my dad gave me as an adult. I left it at the ex-husband's when I left him.
I have (or have had) a King James Version (1611), New King James Version, New American Bible, American Standard Version, Holman Christian Standard Bible, The Message, New Living Translation, Revised Standard Version, Darby Translation, New International Reader's Version, Douay-Rheims Bible, English Standard Version, and The Living Bible. So I've had 14 different Bibles, and counting a number of repeats, I have or have had a grand total of 26 Bibles. I currently still own 4 (NLT, KJV, HCSB, and NKJV).
I was surprised I've owned so few over the years. I'm only counting collections of BOTH the Old and New Testaments, not just the small New Testament onlies that are frequently given out to school age kids.
I'm curious, for those of you who no longer own most of the Bibles you once had, where did they end up? (If you haven't already told us.)
I have thousands of Bibles in hundreds of languages. It's called having a smartphone. I can even listen as my phone reads them to me. In English, Koine Greek, French, etc.
They were all over the place in Britain when we were kids. Ironically, it started out as an American version.
I was given one as a child which was the New International Version (or one of its variants) but for obvious reasons prefer the King James and have one of those now.
Got the big family bible on a shelf, right next to Origin of Species, and some speculative tome on alien life.
Had one while being indoctrinated by the priest at school when I was a kid, and a children's bible at some point. I think the former is the one still in my bookcase, though it's kinda scarred; at one point I started to redact all the negative bullshit from it with a black marker, but found the pages were too thin to really keep at it, so I stopped while on the first page (I started somewhere in the middle, can't find that page now). It was a great plan, though, I was going to delete all the crap from all the holy books, and put the collected wisdom of them all in one new book. Would have become and instant classic, of course, but damn, that would have taken a lifetime.
I have: Oxford New Revised Standard edition (it was a school textbook) An old one of my mom's, don't know what it is (an heirloom, of sorts) The Book of Mormon (someone gave it to me) Die Bibel (Martin Luther ubersetzung) (for German study) "Am Anfang, schuff Gott Himmel und Erde" Santa Biblia (for Spanish study) I also have a Russian edition on my phone. "В начале, сотворил Бог небо и землю." I might have 1 or 2 others in with all my other books.
