The Ag Department, not content with starving American children with one-body-size-fits-all stupid nutrition and diet requirements, is now going to try and get convenience stores in poor neighborhoods to stop accepting food stamps.

Their excuse? They want all stores that accept food stamps to sell kale and other crap that's just going to rot on the shelf because nobody is going to buy it.

    McClatchy story

Push for healthier food could push some stores off food stamp program

WASHINGTON - New federal regulations intended to promote healthy eating could make it harder to use food stamps at convenience stores – a change that opponents say will leave disadvantaged people with fewer places to buy groceries.

The standards proposed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture would require retailers that accept food stamps to stock more and fresher varieties of food. But many convenience stores won’t be able to meet the requirements and will be forced from the the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as SNAP, or food stamps, critics say.

Mary Braddock frets that could happen to the convenience stores run by her family near Kansas City, Missouri. Open from 5 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., the Meiners Markets in Lee’s Summit and Blue Springs sell everything from bulk candy and beer to fresh fruit and vegetables. Attached to gas stations, they’re handy pit stops for early risers and late-night shift workers, some of whom rely on food stamps to grab groceries on the go.

But Meiners Markets don’t have the shelf space to display the mandatory number of items at all times, and it will be too costly to stock all the unprocessed and perishable foods required, Braddock said.

Her customers aren’t likely to buy kale, duck or lamb, she said, so such products “will just spoil on the shelves.”

Braddock and other critics of the USDA proposal – including Democratic and Republican lawmakers – complain the new standards will be impossible for many convenience stores and rural markets to meet.

As a result, they warn, tens of thousands of stores across the country could stop accepting food stamps.

“We don’t understand why USDA has drafted this proposed rule in a way that will make it so difficult for small stores to participate in SNAP and will make it harder for SNAP beneficiaries to get food,” Braddock said.

Well, the bad news is that food stamp use increased 58% for black people under Obama. The worse news is that they'll no longer be able to buy food with them.

But heck, the peasants are starving, so let them eat kale!

And of course when all their local stores quit taking food stamps and they're told its the fault of evil Jewish, Korean, Indian, and Mexican grocers, and then told they have take a bus to Whole Foods, the Democrats will blame Republicans and urge people starving in the ghetto to riot. :brood:

I'm sure you'll wack off when the convenience stores quit taking food stamps because, like Venezuela, the government doesn't know a damn thing about how to run a convenience store.

why the hell would you spend food stamps at a convenience store? seems stupid to waste limited funds on premium prices, let alone encourage it.

and what the fuck is so difficult about giving people actual cash on social assistance? Food stamps just strike me as limiting already limited consumer options.

The point of not giving them cash is control. It's like the way you don't get your real paycheck in cash. It gets funneled off into things they say are good for you, like Obamacare.

The problem is that for people in a bad part of town, as would be the case with most poor people, they can't afford to drive ten miles to the Costco every time they need some groceries, and often don't have much money to spend on more than a week's worth of them. The same is true of a lot of college kids who don't hit Sams club and fill their dorm rooms with bargains. Many of these people also don't have convenient transportation, and it's a lot easier and safer for them to walk a block or two to the convenience store than get to some Super Walmart. Most often they might need some beer, smokes, juice, bread, mayo, beans, milk, and other basic staples that you're likely to find at a corner gas-station/quick stop run by a family from Pakistan or Mexico.

We've all been in such stores hundreds of times. They are across the street from a low-end apartment complex.

I would not buy anything in one that wasn't in a sealed package with a whole lot of numbers and international symbols all over it.

If we forced them to sell kale and fruit, I wouldn't get within three feet of it. I'd rather go down to an orchard built on a landfill next to a sewage treatment plant next to a pesticide factory that was downwind from a Chinese nuclear reactor and pick it myself.

They will sell zero heads of iceberg lettuce, or kale, or carrots. If we require those stores to display such produce, it will all rot very quickly. They will do the math on throwing money away on crap that goes bad versus what the make off baby food sold to people on WIC, and they will drop WIC. Then the unemployed new mom in the apartment complex across the street will start screaming at the Pakistani guy behind the counter, accusing him of racism because she can't buy baby food and her baby is hungry. He'll blame the government, and she'll blame Republicans, and Democrats will laugh hysterically. Making black people suffer is what they do. It's all they do. Because black lives matter - on election day.

North Carolina is trying to deal with food deserts by subsidizing more farmer's markets. Now you can't swing a dead cat without hitting one. A lot of the churches run shuttle services to and from them.

In the town I live near, people just grow their own produce and several set up a little counter in their front yard to sell the surplus.

A lot of shitty areas don't have real grocery stores and the folks that live there don't always have transportation.

I think the point is to make sure they buy food with it, which is dumb because whether they do it to buy drugs or just need stuff that it doesn't cover like toilet paper and toothpaste, most people I know who get SNAP sell at least part of it for 50 cents on the dollar.

This reminds me quite a bit of that standardized test they came up with for NCLB that had questions that required knowledge of lacrosse. Shrimp, lamb chops, goat milk, and, tofu? Those are totally staples of the diet of poor people, and something I'd totally feel safe buying in a convenience store that last had it's floor mopped in 1976.

What Mrs A said. I had a long post that I lost because my phone has been shutting off randomly lately, but I was once stationed in Louisiana for the commissioning of a ship for a few months in 2013, and most of us didn't have cars there. I once Google bus routes to a place i wanted to go, and Google told me to drive 10 minutes to the first stop on my route. :soma:

Taxi service was shit there too, with the majority of cabs refusing to come out to Avondale (the location of the ship) and the other neighboring areas because most of money was made in NOLA proper for tourists and those who didn't get priced out the area after Katrina.

I used to think that food deserts were complete bullshit because my mom was always able to get around on foot and bus even in our moderately wealthy California suburb....but that's made a lot easier in an area where sidewalks exist and buses ran on a consistent schedule :borg:

"The diet of poor people" has been dictated in large part by how far food stamps and cash can stretch in a month. If healthy food like kale and quinoa were as cheap as a pack of hot dogs and Kraft Mac N Cheese, I guarantee you they'd be on that in a New York minute.

As I've mentioned earlier, my mom made groceries. She knew how to balance a healthy diet even before she got into her fitness stuff. And even then, we'd still be eating $1 Whoops for the last week of the month much of the time.

Ever notice how when there's actual starvation, uber-conservatives don't give a shit, because "the poor deserve to be poor", but if they can make partisan political hay over imaginary starvation, suddenly they give a shit?

There is actual starvation and liberals don't give a shit. Under Michelle's school lunch program, many poor children are not getting enough calories. What school cafeteria workers used to do is give the poor kids extra, which the kids would take home. That gets people fired now.

They also greatly restricted the amount of calories for breakfast, which affects kids who are too poor to have food at home and does absolutely nothing to reduce the breakfast intake of well-off-kids who grab whatever they want out of the refrigerator on their way out the door. Again, liberals applauded the measures.

But Michelle is too fat so all the poor kids have to starve for her. And of course her own kids don't have to eat the "public school" food. They have real chefs with a virtually unlimited budget.

I dunno what kids living off school lunches are doing today, but growing up, I ate what was there. Once my grade school got a decent salad bar, I ate a lot more of that than the crummy shit.
That's the other thing that chaps my hide.

The GOP trots out poor veterans and children only when the other alternative is helping brown people in places we helped to fuck up. The same as they pull for abortion, until the "innocent life" is on this side of the womb and it's parents collect assistance. Then, it's not a "innocent life," but a "future convict."

There are hungry people because minimum wage is a joke in many places.

There are hungry people because elderly people on fixed incomes have to choose between life saving medicine or eating.

There are hungry people because many areas have one grocery store for every five miles in impoverished areas and that one grocery store marks its prices up because they know their carless customer base have no other choice but to buy there or spend all day on the bus trying to get to the next grocery store.

Michelle Obama suggesting things like portion control and healthy food items? That's not starvation. That's giving kids options they may not have at home. Many overweight Americans are poor because cheap shot is loaded with sodium and other shifty fillers.

I agree, It's not part of their diet because, for the most part, it's too expensive. When all you have is EBT/SNAP for your food budget, you aren't going to be spending the ~$10/lb for shrimp, or $13/lb for a lamb chop, all this is going to do is shut down the small convenience store that is the only option for a lot of people.
