Kids pick up on more than adults realize. They certainly don't get all the finer details but they understand how building a wall around Mexico may keep them from seeing friends and family. My brother and I were around that impressionable age when OJ was on trial the first time....I missed most of that televised trial because of school, but my four year old brother who was at home got visibly irritated as to why this guy was always on the tv.

No doubt you're aware that to many blacks, it went deeper than just that. It meant that we finally had the ear of the whole world. At the time, I wasn't thrilled at it was THAT particular black guy who won, but I wasn't willing to piss on any Cheerios over it and I did vote for him. And contrary to what BLM suggests, many of us wanted to believe racism was over.

This win for Trump may not have been an intentional slap in the face to all of the progress minorities have made, and especially the LGBT community, but it sure does feel like some value dollar signs over human decency by pushing him in.

And for the record, I was no Clinton fan. Fuck her and the DNC, but I respect those who were sick of picking the lesser of two evils. It's a scare tactic that both parties have leaned on, and I hope one day in my lifetime that another Ross Perot comes along that can not only gain enough votes to get notice but to win electoral votes in a state bigger than NH. My kid's elementary school is about as multi-cultural as it gets. There are literally Mayflower descendents sitting next to kids who arrived from Haiti a week before school started. Kids from 31 different countries, speaking 15 different languages at home. 30% black, 30% Hispanic, 30% white. I can appreciate that any minority anywhere (and yes, in your example the white kid counts as a minority) would feel alienated. But guess what, even at a school like the one I described, there are kids worried about family members being deported, gay uncles going to jail, or the really horrendous fear, that they will be taken from their parents. Kids aren't clueless, they hear and see the news, they follow adult conversations. Those kids deserve to be told that we are going to protect them. Fuck off with this macho posturing for once.
