When are liberals/Democrats Ever Going to Accept Trump's Election?

Now I know we'll get some people yelling "birthers! birthers!" regarding those who would not accept President Obama's election.

But by any standard the whole birther thing was very much a fringe group with no serious adherents (even if the current President Elect gave support to the idea).

But the current effort to delegitimize Donald Trumps election and cripple his presidency before it even begins is simply mind boggling. It seems to go well beyond the dislike (even if some was racially tinged) toward Barack Obama. The anti Trump thing seems like a large number of people on the left, in the media, and in the entertainment industry simply REFUSE TO BELIEVE that Trump is going to be president.

And it won't serve the nation very well.

I loathe Trump as few people do. But I accept that he's going to be president and hope he does a good job.

I don't play the "not my president", bullshit.

He hasn't even been sworn in, and the congress-critters have just slaughtered hundreds of thousands of people that needed the ACA to survive.

People still get medical care even without the ACA.

No, this won't cool down quickly. Just look at his behaviour. The nepotism ('draining the swamp' ). The conflicts of interest. The general hostility towards dissent. The flat out lies. And boy that's even before he has real power.

This won't be a president everyone can settle on after some time (except for the usual fringe loonies). He's working hard already to widen the rift. Just wait until all the promises the stupid believed crumble into dust. I think we're gonna see approval ratings below 20 percent for the first time and soon.

If @Dinner hadn't told me about checking with the VA for coverage, I'd been royally fucked for certain medical procedures I've needed in the last few months.

Young, single people like me were priced out of health care more often than not.

My mom nearly died fifteen years ago from uterine fibroids that had caused excessively heavy bleeding. Under a regarding care doctor, she could've had access to see a doctor who would have caught it before she became hospitalized and needed emergency surgery. And yeah, she was done with having kids by then, but that's not the point.

So Dayton intends to spend the next four years playaing "I didn't vote for him, but I'll defend him to the death."

I think plenty have accepted Trump's election. But accepting his election doesn't mean one has to accept that he is fit to be President, that he is good for America or good for the world at large. He's not, and it is the right of any person to express their concerns over what he may do over the next four years and some of the very alarming things that we already know about him, such as his immaturity, narcissism, discriminatory polices and influence from foreign sources, mean that many people are concerned.

I dunno... it could wind up being in the rest of the planet's best interest for the US to finally concede their "great experiment" has gone the way of the steam locomotive. It was great for the 19th and early 20th centuries, but it's an obsolete idea that has been surpassed by subsequent versions.

Unlike the birther movement, no one is in denial about his being elected president of the US. It is accepted fact.

There is discussion and concern about events that led to his election. Will these invalidate people's votes? No. Should we ignore these events? No, not if we value democracy.

Dayton, if you mean "embrace" when you say "accept", then no, that isn't going to happen for many. The donald is an abhorrent person. He isn't likely to change.

How should we react to his election? Cautious optimism is one way. Is this what you mean by accept? I prefer pessimistic pragmatism.

55-58%, the lowest since 1996

conversely, Canada's 2015 election had a turnout of 68%, the highest since '93. The last time we had such low turnout was when we made the mistake of re-electing Herr Harper in '08.

think about this... trump is president with a confirmed "mandate" from about 25% of the voting population. Nearly half of the country looked at the choices to lead them and decided they didn't have a choice worth making.

How many people plastered bumper stickers on their cars which read "My President is Charlton Heston"? The NRA claims a membership of over 4 million, and those stickers would have started appearing in '98 (when Heston was President of the NRA), so if only a quarter of their members put them on their car, that would mean 1 million Americans didn't accept the idea of Bill Clinton being their President. So, should we only mock butthurt when it comes to people who don't share our political opinions, or should we take another view of the matter?

Accept that he's the president? We already have.

Roll over and say "gee, Mr. President, do whatever you want"? Why should we?

No, they were more than a small minority, but the problem with the opposition during the Obama years is that it was much wider than you pretend, and much deeper in its antipathy thn a few wingnuts talking about birth certificates. When the Republican leader in the Senate says that his legislative priority is getting the President to lose the next election, it means he plans on ignoring a whole bunch of things that need to get done. Many people saw eight years of such antics and have concluded that's the new normal.

I'm pretty sure most people are well aware that he will be sworn in on January 20.

Beleiving he isn't President won't, but fighting hard to keep him from succeeding as an authoritarian is definitely good for the country.

I hope he is going to be a good President, too, but there are already dozens of warning signs that he will be a disaster. It's important to point this out and try for ways to mitigate the damage.

He's only in the mid thirties now, which I'm pretty sure is the all time low for somebody who has yet to even take the oath of office. Yes, he will be in the 20s, probably within three months. The only question is how low it needs to get before wide-scale civil disobedience starts in earnest. I know easily ten times as many people headed to Washington for the inauguration protest than I've ever known to go to such a gathering in the past.

The most powerfull man on the planet is a reality tv star who uses social media to critique hollywood stars who "said bad things" about him, and trusts the Russians more than he does the United States Intelligence agencies.

It's kind of a "self-fulfilling prophecy" with the Trump haters. Because they think he should fail, they will sabotage everything he does to ensure his failure. Even when he succeeds, they will spin it as failure. Fuck em' in the ear - I hope they are miserable for the next four years (or eight!) - liberal weeping is music to my ears.

The thing is that the precedent the Trump haters are setting.

One day they will win a presidential election.

And they'll be utterly appalled to see their president treated the same way (or worse) whether there is any of the "Trump justification" for it or not.

Then again, there are those who think past and present behavior are good indicators of future behavior.
