So, The Donald's, um, press conference yesterday. Let's forget the ridiculous presentation (wow, paid clappers and chanting from a 1983 audio cassette!). Let's have a look at what he did. I mean, besides still being in full campaign mode.

    Question: ....
    Answer: *hot air*

    Question: ...
    Answer: *empty slogan*

    Question: ...
Answer: Not you, buddy! I don't like you!

So this is how it's going to be. Any hope that the dignity of the office would make him even slightly presidential has vanished. Also of there being an actual plan to anything. But the crowning achievement was having that clichée of a lawyer up there lying and lying and lying on. I mean, the whole construct is beyond ridiculous. I'm willing to bet my left pinkie he'll be more at Trump Tower than in the White House. So, no contact? No connection? And all while staffing his team with family members? Cool :techman:

Anyway. Before he's even sworn in he has made enemies of the press and pretty much the whole intelligence community. I really wonder, what can possibly go wrong when you alienate these two groups.

I'm slowly moving away from the position that he'll have until after the Midterms. He's doomed.

He might be the first president to be assassinated where everyone breaths a sigh of relief rather than a gasp of awe.

I'm not a fan of Donald Trump.

But you do know a substantial reason many voted for him was BECAUSE the press was his enemy.

And the intelligence community largely works at the pleasure of the president. Not the other way around.

I doubt it. Pence is pretty much his life insurance. Trump is loud and obnoxious but Pence is stealthy and quiet. The latter won't blow up the end of the world over a jeering tweet and female interns won't have to wear African anti rape underwear to work, but that's about the two major differences.

    Then they're idiots.

He got more free Press and attention than any candidate on either side of the aisle. The historic element of Hilary Clinton's nomination took a backseat to all his bullying and attention whoring antics which the media ate up for ratings and looks.

That is, until he actually got the nomination, and suddenly it was " :flow: "

Fuck the media. They're as much to blame as the DNC, if not moreso. :dayton:

At least the ride is reaching the top. We have our seats and I hope the people on the ground don't get hit with any collateral damage.

I think one would have to have been pathologically optimistic to entertain that hope.

Has anyone seen any president -- even Dubbya -- who lacked the decorum to keep his lousy trap shut in the interim between election and office?
But no, it has been one tweetstorm after another.

Or rather, Pence is the Republican party's life insurance. Not only is he a mean little bugger such as the Tea Party loves, he will soon VP. An ego-enslaved loose cannon like Donald can be dispensed with via impeachment. All you need are the votes.

This must be why Obama has been working 24/7 on this Russian angle. Try to get Donald's primaries opponents to believe that they were also torpedoed by them Roose-keys and you might just get those votes.
Well, we can always hope, pathologically or not.

What are you talking about? Like it or not (and there's plenty not to like) Donald Trump becomes the 45th president of the U.S. a week from tomorrow barring the impact of a large asteroid or a small bullet.

Or a wee aneurysm. But I'm struggling to see your point.

At the same moment Donald becomes pres, Pence becomes VP, and Donald thus becomes dispensable if you can get enough members of congress to see it that way. And the idea that Russian hijinks not only helped Donald win the presidency but helped him win the nomination would get an awful lot of powerful members of the Republican caucus awfully pissed off.

And of course in your world, that's no cause for alarm.

Indeed we do live in times where everybody can have their opinions confirmed at the press of a button. Lock yourself in your bubble and you could think that buh-ya, I'm SO right because there is NO dissenting voice anywhere! No wonder 'the media' are the enemy - they usually don't write what you already believe in. And so they become Lügenpresse because people don't get their premade opinions confirmed. Better go to the fringe/fake news/conspiracy website of your choice where you won't be challenged.

It's a very very dangerous development.

As for the intelligence community. Well. That's how it should be according to the law. But we both know it ain't so. Which can be a good thing under certain circumstances.

I don't see Teh Donald being in the Oval Office for 4 years.

He'll either quit, or be impeached.

The White House Race is over 2 months now, but you wouldn't know that from his talk & behaviour.

Oh, I can see him there for a full term. In spite of whatever fantasies some people may have, he isn't going to get impeached or have his election overturned on some technicality. Can't really say if he'd get the Republican nomination again for re-election, but I wouldn't just disregard that possibility. One thing I'd like to see out of this is for the parties to get their shit together and run more moderate, populist candidates, but I doubt that'll happen. The Democrats need to ditch the regressive identity politics portion of their party if they have any hope of winning the next election in any case, even if the candidate they're running against isn't Trump. Actually especially if it isn't Trump.

Note his use of private security. He is likely alienating the Secret Service. They'll do their job, but he is explicitly saying he doesn't trust them. A paranoid, delusional, narcissist with his finger on the button. What could possibly go wrong?

I've always thought the whole business of being president ---- apart from the opportunity to be constantly treated like royalty, as US presidents are ---- would bore the hell out of a guy like that.

    1) He's reacting to the widespread revulsion at his success and the prospect of him wielding power.

    2) Anyone as ego-driven as him always has scores to settle. He's already got tons of them with the Republican leadership. That alone ought to be interesting.

Why not? The impeachment ground of "high crimes and misdemeanours" is pretty wide ranging and includes dereliction of duty while in office, conduct unbecoming the office holder and abuse of office. If he continues as he is I can certainly see a situation arising that night lead to an impeachment attempt.

Unless they come to see Mike Pence as a safer bet ----- if Trump seems like a loose cannon to them.

OR if it emerges that the Russians screwed them (the leadership) during the primaries. At which point they might be willing to ditch Donald.

I'm not saying it's going to happen. But we live in interesting times.
