No, they did not back the rally. What they did do is agree to represent the organizers in a law suit specifically about why the city revoked the permits for the right wing group but gave permits to two left wing groups.

The ACLU represents anyone who has a decent civil liberties case to be brought before the court even if they do not agree with said group. That is something the right wing often ignores when Rush Limbaugh and the rest of the talk radio liars spin how supposedly evil the ACLU is. In reality, the ACLU is extremely neutral and agrees to provide free legal services for everyone provided they espouse nonviolence and there is a legal case to be made about constitutional or civil rights violations.

The message of racism being a fundamentally evil thing has been so successful that in some ways it has flipped around to being counter-productive.

Yep. I think people don't analyse or look outside of their bubbles. We have plenty of liberals here in California who pat themselves on the back for not using vulgar language towards minorities who think nothing of looking down on these same groups for not just picking up and going to college or moving to affordable areas or not getting why people get pissed off by gentrification.
