Why we cannot rely on charity to do disaster relief.

So some people have wondered why the US needs so much money for FEMA and why we should pay taxes to such things. According to them Americans are very generous in giving to charities like the church who have shelter and soup kitchens in almost every community in the US.

At the link is a video which seems to show the Osteen church is above water even if the basement might be flooded and is huge and could be used to set up shelter and food distribution. It wasn't planned for such things,but some state buildings were made to be shelters in case of flooding.

We cannot rely on charity to coordinate and be our disaster relief. We need a well funded and run FEMA in order to provide relief for any of us in time of need. We see a church that could use worldwide donations and organisation to assist in relief in it's home city and that is not even a thought. We can make sure our government sets up and prepares for disasters and fund disaster relief which helps us all.

By paying taxes and working at it now for the future that is how we buy the well supported bootstraps we will lift our own communities up with when the water gets too high.

At any rate it does not change my point that even if they wanted to they are not prepared to coordinate such a massive rescue and recovery effort with others, nor can they do it all themselves. However the government can.

This story has been debunked. There was flooding on the grounds of the church.

In the car park and only one small portion of one corner of a giant lot with multilevel parking structures. Not in the building itself. The huckster has been shamed into opening his doors to those in need.

The fraudster enriches himself so that he has a $10.5 million mansion (in Texas so it would be many times that in a nice state) but wouldn't actually help the needy.

You can say what you want about @Dayton3, but he's an independent thinker and that's rare. I don't agree with with many of his opinions, but I respect them all because he freely provides support for his conclusions.
