I mentioned this shooting and lack of media response to the shooting in a different thread. It was a "narrative" FAIL - black guy shooting up a white church.
Also (more importantly) good guy with a gun stopping further carnage. Turns out it was "revenge" for the Dylan Roof church shooting. Bottom line it's
    even before this Vegas shooting.

Got a friend staying in the Excalibur, thankfully she's fine, although she's either very unlucky or a real life Hans Gruber.

This is about the fifth time in two years that a place has been hit either where she is, or where she's just left. I'm thinking she could make a mint by places paying her not to go to them.

And with the whole gun regulations debate, there was a survivor from Columbine who came across well - people are a bigger problem than the guns.

Limiting gun ownership is about reducing the scale of death, not actually dealing with root causes. In the UK gangs have now moved on to caustic substances to inflict harm, so there are calls to limit sales, at what point - after they've moved from guns to knives to acids to whatever the fuck next - do we face facts and recognise Western society needs parking on a shrinks couch?

Indeed! It's so common in Chicago it normally takes a long weekend (4th of July or Memorial Day or whatever) worth of shooting to get enough of a body count to make the news.

totally agree! Western society is (in theory) the accepted standard of a functioning, free, successful society. Yet at the end of the day we have more seriously depressed, disillusioned, stressed out, lazy, self-centered, etc. people than we should considering the relative advantages of living here. Many books have been written on this, many studies have been done about this. I have theories myself.....but no workable solutions that would pass muster in a Western society, that's the Catch-22 we face!

so.....you're saying it was......premeditated? :chris: People have brought up the fact that while nobody checks your baggage going into your hotel room, checking into a room with way, way more baggage than one person normally takes should be a "red flag" to the staff. :jayzus: Man I can't wait to find out what this guy's motivation was, besides crazy conspiracy theories and speculation. His brother said he wasn't even a big "gun guy" or "political guy" so he can't figure it out either.
Doubt anybody paid him to do this, because obviously he wouldn't live to spend the money. He never went on a wild spending spree prior so he never got paid upfront to do this - if he was paid upfront he would have a dozen hookers saying they were with him in the past week or so. No manifesto, nothing.

HOWEVER :chris: his long time girlfriend is out of the country right now. While authorities claim she's not a "person of interest" maybe they said that so she wouldn't be afraid to return to the US because she is (especially now that we have no idea why he did this) indeed a person of interest! If she wasn't complicit at least she can help connect-the-dots with the shooter.

You can legally own them, but they have to have been manufactured before some year in the 80's, so they're prohibitively expensive. Additionally, you have to fill out reams of paperwork and go through an extremely thorough background check that goes way above and beyond the one to purchase a gun or get a carry permit. Finally, you have to buy a $200 tax stamp.

That said, pretty much the only people who go through all that are collectors. They do it because they want them...not because they need them.

Neither, no. Killing animals for sport doesn't appeal and is, frankly, sick. If it's for food, not so bad, but you don't need full auto for deer unless you intend to make pate and wanna skip a step. I've used a crossbow, which should manage most stuff you'd wanna eat.

As for range shooting, why bother unless it's competitive (not interested) or you wanna improve your aim for self-defence or hunting (see above and, since I don't carry for self-defence, moot)?

Same reason as going for a walk or going to the top of a mountain - it's there.

I've done range shooting, and it's worth having a try as it's fun. I found it fun in a rollercoaster type way, occasional bit of entertainment, wouldn't regard it as something I'd want to do daily.

The Americans need to get into fencing, which is even more fun and will eventually help tackle the obesity epidemic, plus, before tackling obesity, it'd mean a shitload of easy victories for me.

    July 1st, 1986.

The background check is extensive and you have to have a letter, on official letterhead, from the chief law enforcement officer in your jurisdiction (Chief of Police or Sheriff) saying that you have his blessing for purchasing one. It takes about six months and costs about $32,000 to legally turn a semi-automatic AR15 into a legal fully-automatic AR15.

Actually, when I go to cons sometimes I bring a huge amount of baggage. I have costumes, regular clothes, rave supplies, a sewing machine at times, our computer equipment, food for the weekend, and that is not to mention the plushies. Bringing twenty three guns and ammo for them would probably be less luggage. The hotel staff would get reamed if they started to search luggage of people who brought a lot. Now perhaps if you were to only search old straight white guys with enough luggage to hide a machine gun you might get somewhere, but I am pretty sure they would complain. Even though most of them complain about people having too much luggage like when their wives come along. We are not supposed to profile people.

Actually maybe you are on to something. As long as we only bothered with men's luggage since they seem to be the majority of assault gun owners and mass shooters we could do it. You would want to eliminate the gay guys too because they do not shoot places up. Maybe profiling is not such a bad thing, and white guys do seem to be shooting up the place. Are you up for being searched for guns every time you stay in a hotel?

Explains why everyone knows about it. The media certainly had nothing to do with you knowing about a shooting where no one you know was killed in a place you were not even close to at a time when you were doing other things. Are you psychic or are your friends just really well informed about world happenings? If so how are they informed because if it is the media then you are wrong.

You know there is an argument for the balance of danger for society and allowing someone their recreational activity. However if a law abiding citizen wants to shoot a gun at a range because it makes them feel like a big man I am for trying to have methods where that can be done. Even if it is just for them to get off on. I think that we need to start realizing that might be done in a place meant for shooting and the guns may stay there where it is done in a safe manner. Still I am up for allowing people their hobbies even if they are monumentally dangerous and I do not get them at all. Sort of like I am a for allowing people to jump off of tall places with rubber bands strapped to their ankles. I do not quite get that whole form of entertainment, but as long as they are not doing it over crowds of people endangering others I am for letting them do so. Perhaps we need to put recreational gun use in approved locations. However, just because you do not get the joy of shooting a gun does not mean we should never allow it to happen. I do think it is time we realize letting crazy white dudes stockpile assault weapons is something we do not need to allow to happen.

And am I correct in thinking that Class III owners are subject to periodic inspections by the BATF to make sure that their weapons are secured?

The shooter checked in to his hotel three days before the shooting, so it's possible that he brought in the guns a few at a time and not all at once.

    Still, WTF? :wtf:

My boss and I were joking about it on how he could've gotten so many guns into the hotel.

One assumes that his initial plan may have been somewhat different to what transpired, since he only used one of the guns.

Heard a new (to me, anyway) expression yesterday: Ammosexuals.

Those are the guys who turn every discussion of mass shootings into a discussion of the fine points of various weapons and their adaptations. To me, they all look like this guy:

Here is the problem. You ask a loaded question. There is no way to prevent all of these things so the moment someone gives and answer you chime in that it will not work. That is immature and it is not helpful in the discussion. The fact is we can do better in making it harder for these things to be done, and that will stop some of them from happening. The better we do the harder it is and the more of these people we will catch or stop from doing these things. That is the reason we should do it. So stop being a child and having your little tantrum screaming gun grabber libruls because babies should not be playing with firearms anyway, and you are showing us you are a little baby with your childish arguments and hissy fits.
