I agree with you in spirit, but would lean against one point. Being created equal implies starting out equal, not ending up equal. Life is a series of actions and decisions. Actions can be ‘evil,’ and decisions have consequences.

Just because he was promised inalienable rights to life, liberty, etc., doesn’t mean Charles Manson wasn’t (justly) robbed of this in his youth. Manson’s actions were a black-and-white example, but the justice system deals with the entire grayscale spectrum. Your rights are challenged the moment your actions infringe on another’s rights.

My point is Dayton is technically correct in asserting that people are not ENTIRELY free to behave anyway they like. And I believe this is what he was intending to mean.
