There are no buildings in Jerusalem suitable for an at least temporary embassy? So maybe it is all smoke and mirrors to get the Evangelicals to vote for Moore. Thank you for supporting that hypothesis.

They're not going to build an embassy. They're going to rebuild the Temple destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE, and usher in the end times. The Temple will be the best temple, believe me. Believe me, people are already saying great things about it.

Also, presumably the new embassy won't be built unless the Palestinians pay for it. That's how it works these days, right?

Well IIRC, all new embassies built by the U.S. are like modern fortresses (literally). Expensive and difficult to build.

I had to look up Lonesome Rhodes, but when I read this I had Brent Spiner's character from Night Court's voice in my head. It's also the voice from "A Fist Full of Datas".

That reminds me. This shit is literally happening because the evangelicals who constitute the GOP's base wants to accelerate the end times.
Someone remind me? They don't actually give a shit about Jews other than having them rebuild the temple or some such? After that they're supposed to be killed in the war and/or converted to Christianity. Is that it?

IIRC George Bush started babbling to Jacques Chirac about this stuff when he was trying to justify the invasion of Iraq too.

Do you actually KNOW any evangelicals who SERIOUSLY talk about the "end times" Rick?

I don't and I've attended church with what you would call conservative evangelicals for decades. Don't think I've even heard a sermon over it.

IIRC you're from Ireland so perhaps its a Catholic thing.

If you are a teacher in Arkansas as you claim you may very well know a bunch of them. It is not like they bring it up at the water cooler, but they are all around you. You are probably one of those people. You probably voted for trump because you thought he would bring in the end times and judgment on all the evildoers of the world.

It isn't a Catholic thing. It's an evangelical thing.

And you're either lying or ignorant because polling data disagrees with you.

You're own link says that more Catholics than Protestants believe in the near term return of Christ to Earth.

And in regard to what American believe, the time frame is 2050!!!! A major portion of Americans alive today won't even be alive then. Which means its as real to them as the 23rd century.

I did not vote for Donald Trump and I've no special desire to see what most people refer to the "end times" come about during my, or my childs, or my hypothetical grand childrens life time. Personally I would like to see our world hang around to at least ring in the third millennium.

False. It says that more Catholics than mainline Protestants do. Evangelicals, who we're talking about, have a much higher percentage than either.

    :dayton:

2050 is 33 years away and they believe that the end times are coming before then. It is utterly dismaying that major geopolitical decisions are being influenced by this.

Perhaps if you did not casually dismiss organized religion as "bronze age superstition" (at least I think that was you, could've been someone else) perhaps you could understand its influence on people better.

    Sneering contempt never solved anything.

Well, apart from arguably its very earliest origins, Judaeo-Chrisitian religion is Iron Age. And it's in a somewhat different category to mere superstition. But sneering is more than justified when it comes to this stuff, as a consequence of understanding rather than an obstacle to it.

Of course, given your ferocious resistance to understanding religion any time the subject is discussed, I must ask you to remove the log in your own eye.

Well, the idea of a rapture and end times was invented by an Irish protestant in the late 18th century but, no, Catholics nor any none evagelical group perscribe to that nonsense.

You have the "1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith" in your signature, and you think that you have a personal line to the creator of the universe.
