Mary! Have you thought of writing Civil War bodice rippers? With prose like that you could be the Barbara Cartland of Dixie.

That "nation" had seceded a few months earlier for, once again, the purpose of protecting their right to own human beings. They then continued the treason they were committing for the sake of their immoral cause by attacking a pre-existing fort. Can you truly not see why acting as if they were acting in some kind of noble self-defense is so laughable?

See, thing is Germany was embarrassed by their nation’s actions. But I also think that WWII, while a shameful chapter of their history, is only one small part. As far as I’m aware, Germany wasn’t explicitly built on the backbone of an enslaved underclass and they got a karmic asskicking in the way the nation was split for fifty years after the end of the war.

Lincoln was an abolitionist who prioritized ending slavery in the same way Obama prioritized full marriage benefits for same sex couples in 2008. It’s entirely feasible that without the South seceding over the issue, he personally wouldn’t have done a damn thing to end the practice.

And yet not one statue memorializes Forrest for what he did after leaving the Klan. What other conclusion is there to make of that?

We aren’t the ones downplaying history. You fuckos have been doing that since your grandpappy decided to troll uppidy negroes who dare ask for things like equal rights and fair pay.

Perhaps. Seeing as you chose not to quote those, but to instead quote some praise that emphasised hostility towards the slaves, and were unable to see its hostility, I am uncertain that your reading is correct; and all too certain that if those dedications did praise decent behaviour, they failed to get their point across to you.

If he ordered it, he's guilty of a war crime even under the standards of the day. If he allowed it, he's guilty of a war crime even under the standards of the day. If, as he claimed, it happened without his knowledge, he's still guilty of a war crime because it was his duty as Commanding Officer to see that those who committed the massacre faced justice. No one, not even one scapegoat Private, ever did.

I can only speak for myself, but I'm not a huge fan of putting up statues of people that massacred unarmed, surrendered soldiers because of the color of their skin.

The soldiers were determined to have been fleeing with their battle flag still up, under supporting fire from union river boats.

Yes, because he is General Forrest. Mattis will one day be memorialized in uniform, despite his post military civic achievements.

    Confederate Constitution, Article I Section 9 (4)

    Article I Section 9(4)
No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law denying or impairing the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed.

He fought for that. He later helped to organize the KKK, an organization that is responsible for the murder of THOUSANDS of Southern Blacks.

He may have wisely sought to redeem himself later in life, but let's not romanticize him or his legacy. He was a brilliant miltary strategist with poor moral character and the leader of a murderous organzation that endures to this day. Poster child for White Privilege. Thinking of him makes me sick to my stomach and I'm happy taxpayers in Memphis don't have to foot the bill for his statue anymore.

So basically I've learned that @Robert E Ron Paul Lee is proudly related to a KKK founding member and is basically a traitor to the Republic of the United States of America?

This thread has gone worse for him than "Dayton's Greatest Hits" did for @Dayton3

I saw an article about some Republican debialists wanting to put up a Confederate statue to "local black Confederate combat soldiers" thinking that was the way to make a Confederate monument which couldn't be taken down. The problem is not a single black Confederate soldier from South Carolina ever was legally allowed to hold a gun of any kind and the very, very few they had (all at the end of the war) could only be laborers. They literally made it against the law in South Carolina.

Tge Confederates did the same thing at the vattle of the crater. They were literally quoted, by numerous Confederate sources mind you, as ordering "Let the whites surrender but kill the niggers."

That battle was a cluster fuck which should have been a Union victory. Both sides had dug in defensive fortifications so a group of miners who had jpined the union army decided to vecome sappers, dug a tunnel from the union lines under the Confederate fortifications, then packed the whole damn tunnep with explosives. It created a massive crater. The Union then attacked and it should have been an easy ein but the poorly trained soldiers went down into the crater while timely Confederate reenforcements arrived and took up positions at tge top of the crater lip. It was like fish in a barrel.

The Leader of the Memphis Police Union is going nuts about the sale - for different primary motivations than mine.

However, this is an issue that I have brought up in this thread before. I just find it interesting when prominent black citizens of Memphis share in my goal. It destroys the narrative.

In his eyes, this is a scheme for personal enrichment: https://www.facebook.com/michaelrwill/posts/10212206324288120

Let me give you a scenario. You've dropped your rifle and surrendered. The enemy then begins killing the soldiers that have surrendered. What are you going to do? I'm going to run. Where am I going to run? Towards the closest friendly forces.

The journals of those involved on the Confederate side, including Forrest own words, clearly show that Confederate forces were killing unarmed, surrendered soldiers. If what you suggest was true, why would he feel the need to justify his actions and put the blame on his soldiers (Grade A leadership there, Champ.)

As for the larger issue of the thread, let me know when TBI agents are putting Memphis Councilmen in handcuffs. Until then, this isn't going to change.

The city attorney focused so much attention on the heritage protection act (which he still failed to get around) that he ignored state law on selling land and property recognized as historic (which this was by both the state and federal governments). Basically state law says that historic sites have to remain preserved in perpetuity when transferring from any level of government in Tennessee to private hands.
