so why can't it be that you need to get with us on guns? ;) Here is my position:

    1) I support mandatory training to purchase a gun. The training requirements increase as the complexity of the gun increases. Basically treat guns like vehicles.
    2) I support background checks - sadly if the various agencies don't input the data they don't work. Slam the agencies that drop the ball. :nono:
    3) Vet the person, not the weapon. In other words once you are free & clear to own & shoot weapons, you can own & shoot whatever weapon you want. Here is my
reasoning: a sane non-criminal person will never go ape-shit and shoot up the joint no matter what type of weapons they own. An insane criminal will inflict
death & mayhem with any weapon they can find.

Bottom line - don't take away the rights of sane vetted law abiding gun owners (sane law abiding people won't mind following rules - it's what they do) if we can just
ensure that the systems in place are utilized. Any thoughts?

That makes sense, but those risks still seem less dangerous than the risk of blinding oneself with homemade spirits or accidentally exploding home distilleries.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to take a stab at home distilling. But the risks far outweigh the benefits. It's the reverse with growing marijuana at home (which I don't do, but am legally permitted to do).

yeah... so how often do you check up to make sure they're sane and law abiding? I mean, wasn't the guy that shot up Fort Hood a psychiatrist???

Also, what about carrying in public-open or concealed? Numbers seem to show that the odds of the good guy with a gun either shooting the wrong person or being an identification issue for the actual cops is far more likely than them being of any use. There simply isn't a demonstrable public/social benefit to contrast against the problems an armed public creates.

the guy who shot up Fort Hood sent out many "red flags" to his fellow Army officers but "the Army" ignored their warnings because none of the higher ranking officers would have "picking on a muslim" on their OER (Officer Efficiency Report) because of political correctness. Maybe you know more than I do with my 22+ years of military experience. Why does carrying in public bother you? Do you think somebody about to rob a store walks around displaying their weapon with so many witnesses seeing them displaying said weapon prior to the robbery? Of course you don't hear about the "good guys" who just by displaying their concealed (or open carry) weapon
deter a potential criminal from their criminal act. But it happens - it happens a lot and I know people who have stopped crime just by letting it be known that they are armed. That doesn't fit "the narrative" so I can't expect you to know about this.

yet that doesn't answer the question about how frequently mental competency is checked up on. It does however tell us that even the Army, for all of its organization and oversight of its members, isn't able to keep them "vetted" any better than a high school can its students.

so obviously "vetting the person" isn't enough, is it?
Obvioulsy, nobody about to rob a store wanders around waving a gun on the way to doing so. Although we did hear about the good guys with hidden guns in the article I posted earlier... 35:1 the person that gets shot with their gun won't be a "bad guy"-in fact, the odds are over double it'll be a wife or girlfriend in a domestic dispute (600 women per year are shot in domestic violence vs. only 260 perps)...
Your anecdotes about "knowing a guy" are meaningless. I know plenty of folks (and I myself) have interceded on others' behalf without having to threaten pulling a gun out-of course that's easier for us to do given the odds of the thug we're confronting carrying a gun are pretty low.

true it is a good thread. This opioid thing is pretty nasty and (of course) there is no simple fix. As for Tylenol being just as good as morphine (or whatever the claim was) we will have to a agree to disagree on that. Granted rushing right in with anything addictive for routine dental work probably isn't the smart play. But when I had half of my stomach removed along with my gall bladder & some intestines quite some years ago the morphine did the trick for managing the pain.

From what I've read and also personal experience Morphine it seems is considered (despite its sometimes troubled history) a fairly mild opiate these days.

I don't have any experience with anything stronger so I can't compare it - why people take chances with fentantyl being as high-octane as it is and often with no way to test it's strength (until it's too late) is beyond me. :jayzus:

I do luvs me some caffeine I must say! Studies show it improves many kinds of athletic performance by 4 percent, with even higher performance increases for some specific types of exercise. Toss in it's almost zero calories and coffee is really awesome!

Without infection extractions are not terribly painful once completed and sealed. It is the infection and cavities that are open that are painful and Tylenol does not touch that shit at all. Now vicodin takes that pain away. Percocet not as much. You also have to remember those things come in small medium and zombie.

the army used to (probably still do) pass out percocet & vicodin & tylenol 3 like candy. If you aren't on "flight status" or have other restrictions where you can crash a plane & kill somebody they want you back on the job & working, especially if you are an NCO. And since aging NCO's have accumulated the most lingering injuries but they still have to keep up with the young bucks physically, many are on painkillers 24/7. My son was a combat medic at Fort Benning (infantry base) and grunts really have it rough - those guys train like demons! :whew: By the time they are 30 or so their bodies are beat down and worn out. :(

The stuff is ok but I don't get the feeling that opioid addicts must get. I have played around with all of those substances at high doses and good weed can be much more mellow and trippy. It is nothing like some coke and some dxm. You wanna talk weekend without sleep and some fun with light trails at a rave and some dancing and also being chatty and up for anything and I can keep up with the teens given the right mix. Of course there is the crash, but sure I will walk all over the city and not feel the burn until the drugs wear off. The hangover does not involve vomiting and feeling so bad as with an opioid. The dxm back end is actually quite pleasant and relaxing.

wow that whole dxm thing (isn't he a rapper?) and going a whole weekend without sleep does not sound very pleasant. Are "light trails" anything like incoming enemy tracer fire? And walking all over the city exhausted? Damn I thought combat was rough, but Tererun's life would put my dick in the dirt!

It is not terrible. The light trails are in dark situations with bright moving light. Going long periods of time without sleep is not terrible if you are doing something you want to do. If it is something you hate to do, or there are long periods of boredom then it is not pleasant. It is also not something you do all the time. I would imagine if it was drills or dealing with incoming tracer fire that was going to kill me and not glow in the dark paintballs that would be the suck and I would much rather be home resting with my pillow and not stringing myself out on some drugs.

Also you do have to get some sleep. The problem with lots of uppers is when it gets into the hands of an obsessive type who uses it for continuous long term avoidance of sleep. If I am going to stay up for a weekend it is because of an event and not just because. The event ends and I make sure there is a day on the back end to just sleep and rest. I get a cheapo hotel and do not drive long distances because it just doesn't work. The people who use it for continued times because they are working or just partying every night do burn themselves, and you are working towards a very real psychotic break because the mind needs a rest. Plus the drugs do tend to stop really working if you are driving or doing monotonous tasks like study or work. That is when the accidents happen.

I also have to wonder if a twenty four hour cycle is right for some people I have to force myself into sleep and being up if I run on a twenty four hour cycle. I do better adding about ten hours to it and being awake for nearly twenty four hours with a ten hour sleep period. Of course I can nap in that twenty four hour period for a bit, but if I can schedule things right I tend to drift into that schedule despite light and dark. It is when that alarm or work pulls me out of that cycle I get tired moments of exhaustion more.
